I don't think that's a move the Flames make, I do have a question about it though. If this were to happen and the Sabres bought out Lucic, would the Flames then be able to sign him at a lower cap hit??

No thats cap circumvention now. Plus the buyout window is before signing bonuses so that wouldn't save Buffalo any real money

Mangiapane: 26 YO 1 Year Left to UFA - Last 3 Seasons: 206 GP / 70 G / 49 A / 119 PTS
Olofsson: 26 YO 1 Year Left to UFA - Last 3 Seasons: 182 GP / 53 G / 70 A / 123 PTS

I think that Mangiapane has a better all around game, but I think that people tend to think that if you've ever suited up for the Sabres you suck at hockey and that's silly.

Both players are going to get a similar contract at least in terms of AAV and this gives you and additional ~$11 million in Cap space

I guess I don't see how that's cap circumvention.. He'd be a free agent why can't he go anywhere he wants to?

Because they made a rule about signing with a team you were traded from after the Orpik incident

Got it, I get confused on how it worked with Stone but wouldn't work in a situation like this, was it cause Calgary bouhgt him out?

This prime example of glosses over the truth by looking at production only. 98 of Mangiapane's 119 points came at even strength, whereas only 78 of Olofsson's 123 points came at even strength. Mangiapane's production would be much higher if he played on someone's first powerplay unit. This also doesn't take into account the massive difference in their 2-way game.

Yes. Its due to the Orpik incident that they put in the whole "cant sign with a team you were traded from for a year" or whatever thing

See, I never said that Olofsson was as good of a player as Mangiapane, but they do produce similarly which is at least worth noting.

Also, that is a difference of 0.476 EV PPG for Mangiapane to 0.429 EV PPG for Olofsson we aren't talking worlds different here... (=0.047 EV PPG or just under 4 in a full 82 game season)

I believe that the difference in their two way game could be accounted for with the additional $11+ million dollars of cap space cleared up.

I guess IMO losing one or more of Gaudreau, Tkchuk, Kylington, Gudbranson, Zadorov hurts you way more than swapping Mangiapane for Olofsson and being able to keep all of those guys or add additional pieces elsewhere
