If Monahan gets going again, the Coyotes could really benefit here. Obviously the Flames want to move him, so why not take a flyer on a good player and get some draft capital. If he doesnt work out, hey, you still get picks

I actually don't hate it. Wouldn't give up 7 just to get rid of two years of Murray and Zaitsev but Schmaltz is a great, young top 6 forward with term on a cheap contract.

Trading a top 10 to move bad money is such a bad idea. Shmaltz is good, but not worth a top 10 pick. Sens will be able to move off of bad money without resorting to this

I feel like it depends on who is available at 7. I think Nazar would be perfect for the Sens, but they want to finish rebuilding and compete ASAP. Schmaltz is a superb player who would immediately make an impact on the team. This trade is essentially what VAN did in the OEL trade

Based off of the OEL trade. Schmaltz would make an immediate impact on the Sens, could easily add a 3rd to go along with Schmaltz

7OA is a pretty steep ask. I cant see them adding anything significant

Nah. You take Kemell or Savoie. Not enough quality for ottawa to trade the pick

Sens are essentially guaranteed one of Gauthier, Kemmel or Lekkerimaki. The gulf of talent between that and Shmaltz is significant imo, even if those players are further from an NHL impact vs Shmaltz.

Also the OEL trade was not good for Vancouver. They swapped a bunch of bad, but expiring contracts for an ugly long term contract, and gave up the Dylan Guenther pick for a good not great top 6 forward. Guenther is gonna make this deal look like a disaster, and so is the OEL deal.

Ottawa needs to clear some of these underperforming contracts, but they aren't close to the desperation that Vancouver had. White is an extremely easy buyout. Murray was totally capable in net this year barring a couple stinkers, but with his injury history he will likely end up LTIR'd to end this deal. Zaitsev will be the hardest to deal with, but Ottawa has 2nds and 3rds, which should be completely sufficient to move that contract.

What if you included Carolinas first and Ottawa’s second from Tampa or Ottawa’s 3rd then it’s essentially 20 spots in the draft plus a late 2nd/3rd for schmaltz and 10mil in cap.

I could see it for sure. Worth it for AZ and kind of evens it out for OTT

OTT is not trading 7th OA to dump cap space and take on a 3rd line player, OTT is not trading 7th OA for low end middle 6 player, OTT declines this, Schmaltz had a career year, career year does not mean he is worth the moon

I am not against it. I would have been before last season but I changed my opinion on Schmaltz

    Giroux - Stutzle - Batherson
    Tkachuk - Norris - Schmaltz
    Formenton - Pinto - Brown
    Joseph - Kastelic - White
    Kelly/Watson

    That's some crazy depth

    I would decline easily then

I would only trade the 7th OA pick for Schmaltz if Ottawa can dump all that salary

NHL would pay Arizona bills anyway, as usual.

And we don't even know how the Sens will operate going forward, maybe the team gets sold in the near future, maybe Melnyk's daughters have a different approach
