I really don't see Matthews leaving Toronto for Arizona. I think he re-signs in Toronto or goes to another big Canadian or (honestly more likely) American market. Don't think he goes to a small market, even if it's home... he seems to enjoy the spotlight.

Seen a leafs game in Arizona, and it was probably 10-1 Mathews sweaters to anything else. Will be interesting times for sure, kopitar contract I believe is up similar timing, not sure who else, tkachuk/laine/Dubois was his draft class, but none of them will be for sure free agents by then. Rangers/Vegas probably up against cap, so might not be a ton of teams that could pull it off. Could see Arizona doing everything possible for him.

Yeah, he's tonna go home just like every single ufa star. Oh wait, that has happened literally once in living memory and isnt a thing at all.
I mean, why would he go to Arizona? It doesn't pass any logical evaluation. He's gonna sign in Toronto, the team that drafts their stars keeps their stars 99.9999999% of the time

And why would he want to go there?

Family, sun, escape the scrutiny, less income tax. Home is home, dreamed of donning a coyotes sweater. House that Mathews built possibly in the new complex in the planning stages. Does he not go home every off-season?

So he's gonna go play for a team that is currently playing in a college arena and only exists on life support because bettman cant let it go?
And if family and dreams of playing for the home town team are big deals then why does that pretty much never happen?
If sun and taxes are big deals then how do any teams that get snow or even lots of rain keep players?
Matthews isnt going to Arizona any more than any other superstar is gonna go home.

I don’t know Mathews to comment any further, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

Why not? Name one other star player than tavares who left the team that drafted and developed them on their own accord while still being in their prime years.

Auston Matthews isn't going to that dumpster fire team in Arizona, And neither is Jake Muzzin.
