He really assumed a role of a soldier last season, defending his teammates even if he has not the shape nor the strength to assume this role.

That really showed he wanted to be part of this team, so it's a well deserved contract for a team player

in a year where everythin was a disapointment, wideman was a good surprise for this team. he really sparked that power play and for league minimum, he will give good options to step in to that line up.

Wideman main quality is to quarterback the PP but I'm not a fan of his game in general. He can be burried without penalty so meh...

It tells me they wont go look on the thin UFA market for a veteran RHD.

I expect this Dcore next season:

Big Ed-Petry/Letang
Romy-Savard
Ghule/Xhekaj-Wideman
Shueneman

Edit: added Xhekaj

PP quarterback, physical, really what more can you ask of a league minimum defenseman?

I agree, but what about Harris, Barron, Norlinder, Struble?

Norlinder still needs to show her can adapt to an NHL size rink. Struble isn't even signed and won't be this summer. Harris and Barron likely take turns in the NHL because I think Guhle needs time in the A so he can play 22 min a game instead of 8 and Letang shouldn't be targeted by Montreal considering the term/money he's looking for so both can slot there.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this move. An NHL-caliber defenseman who can put up 30 points for league minimum? Sign me up.

You may like Wideman's game or not but at the end of the day with Petry likely out he's the only guy with experience on this roster that can quarterback a powerplay. Montreal isn't looking to contend next year but still needs to show improvements from their last place finish, his contract is also easy to get traded to a contender looking for depth during the second year if need be.

Everything could change at the training camp, but I disagree Ghule needs time in the AHL.

IMO his defence play, physical development and maturity are on point to make him NHL ready. So much so he nearly made the team last season at 19 y.o.

After a long playoff run and being Canada's captain in this summer's world junior championship, playing bottom pairing minutes would only ease his professionnal career beginnings.

As for the others:
Strubble - NCAA
Norlinder - American hockey adaptation seems difficult. Should be traded before he becomes a bust.
Harris - Coming out of the NCAA, he needs to play big minutes for a full 80+ games season.
Barron - Still need to improve his defensive play. The Wideman signing will keep him in the AHL longer.
*Xhekaj* - A real sleeper. At 6'4", 220lbs, and 11pts in 13 playoffs games in the OHL, he could end up in the 6th spot sooner than later.

Essentially league min, so Widemen could be the worst defenseman in the league and this would be a fine deal. He actually had a not terrible season so yeah, good signing. Kent Hughes W

Such a good signing, especially two years at league minimum
Barron will play a full season in the AHL, and if he is ready by 2023-2024, then Wideman becomes the 7th dman
I expect MTL going :
Eddy-Petry
Romanov-Savard
Guhle/Xhekaj/Harris-Wideman
Schueneman

Everything could change at the training camp, but I disagree Ghule needs time in the AHL.

Once again I'd much rather have my prospect play 22 minutes a game in all situations down in Laval than seeing him play 8 minutes on a third pairing, at least until the holiday break so he can adapt. We seem to forget how big the jump from the CHL to the NHL is sometimes...

Not bad.
Wideman played well this year, and from what I saw, he was the teams unofficial captain
He isn't as bad as people think, even defensively
He's just reliable.
And that's all you want from a 3rd pairing dman.
762k? Wow. Kent Hughes W
Love it that Wideman wanted to stay here

As a Wheatking season ticket holder. A off season of training and prepwork for Guhle to get ready for training camp. Guhle looks ready for the jump. Very impressed with the young dmen.
