Ya I said it last summer, that deal is an overpay (yes it looks worse right now due to the injury and how its effecting his play). They definitely couldn't afford to lose him but also they need that $2M overpay to go elsewhere.

Dallas - Klingberg walks they'll look for a replacement
Arizona - Helps them get to the Cap Floor + picks, could remove Boyd from the equation
Seattle - Fair, I wonder if they try using their cap space to get picks as AZ and others have done in the past.

You know what, fair chance Soucy is traded between now and the deadline, anyway . . . Not sure he would get a 1st round pick "on his own," so if Keith were to waive his NMC for that trade, I do it if I'm Seattle. Both players are UFA at end of season, and perhaps Keith will waive again for a trade to a contender, maximize assets. All being said, Edmonton should not make that deal.

Why not make that deal if you are EDM?

Isles should do it, but Lou won't move Martin.

Sure, maybe Edmonton should . . . but the price is a 1st Round Pick (albeit a late one!). If both Soucy and Keith had more than a year remaining, I'd like the deal for the Oilers more. I just wonder what else they could parlay their 1st for, instead.

Keith has lost a step or two and EDM has Broberg waiting to play, Soucy adds another dimension with his toughness (something EDM really lacks).
Yes the cost is high, however a 28th Overall is not going to be the difference between EDM winning the cup and not.
So really while EDM is in win now mode they need to reconfigure the Dcore for what wins in the playoffs

I hear you. I like Soucy a lot and would have no issue with the Kraken extending him. If this trade were made I would only wonder if the Oilers can keep Soucy beyond 1 season AND re-sign everyone else they want? (even with DK off the books) . . . AND probably upgrade their goaltending?? i mean you traded a 1st for Soucy but have him as your 7th d-man on here.

EDM has been running 11/7 under Woodcroft & Manson, I dont think that will change with Broberg coming into the mix.

The trade is not as simple as Soucy for a 1st, Keith has negative value to the deal.

Because trading a 1st + a 2nd pairing defenseman for a 3rd pairing defenseman just to save $2.75M isn't worth it?

Yep, I realize. It's why I said in my first post that Soucy doesn't get a 1st Rounder all on his own. Like i also said, if Edmonton makes Seattle an offer like that, I'm sure they take it! (Now I'm sort of thinking Seattle should grab a prospect, too!! We'll retain a bit on Soucy for Noah Philp, former Thunderbird! Got ourselves a minor league affiliate to build this year!!)
