Detroits biggest need(s) in order
1. Youngish #2 center
2. 2x top 5 hard to play against dmen
3. Reliable backup to support Bed while Cossa develops

If we take in any bad contracts, injured, expensive or guys over 30, we should be getting near ready prospects or 1stss

The ARI deal makes no sense for ARI. ARI needs prospects and draft picks, while Zadina is still young, Hronek is getting toward the middle. No way ARI doesn't get at least (1) 1st rounder out of a deal for Chychrun (though, the underlying numbers aren't anywhere near as good as the fans think they are, he's still worth a 1st rounder). The proposed deal has quantity, but not a ton of rebuild quality.

The CGY deal doesn't make a lot of financial sense for CGY, so cut out the players and just leave the picks. If CGY can move Lucic and Monahan for a 1st round pick, especially where they are picking this year, then they should do it. Keeping Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane should be the focus. They aren't far off from contending in the West (though, going through COL will be tough). That deal clears up 11.5M of cap space. I'm not sure DET wants to take on 2 bad contracts, even at the price of a 1st round pick.

Dadonov still has a modified NTC, and if ANA was on it, you can expect DET to be on it too. Even if you could get him to waive, there isn't much value coming DET's way in that deal. Brossoit is good for a backup, but it's a 1 year deal before UFA. The return to take on cash has to be worth it.

Trading away 5 assets to get Chychrun who plays a position where we're absolutely stacked with prospects is plain dumb.

The rest isn't better...

I like the Calgary trade for Detroit. They have a ton of cap room and will need help getting to the floor. If Monahan gets healthy and can return to a serviceable 2/3C we can look to resign him or move at deadline. Lucic adds some grit and leadership which this team desperately needs. I don't think Detroit would waste their retention spots on Erne and Osterle though so either Calgary takes them at full price or just remove them from the trade. Lucic has a 10 team trade list and I doubt Detroit would be on it. That is the only issue I see.

Exactly. Those two retention spots are going to be valuable to swing deadline deals when Detroit probably misses the playoffs again. Good chance we would retain to move Dadonov, Monahan, or Lucic right back out again at the deadline. Otherwise, I think it is a good take a swing and see what happens trade with the most valuable pieces going either way being a first round pick and cap space. I am ok with us spending this close to the cap due to all three acquisitions having only one year left on their contracts and being serviceable, roster players (assuming Monahan recovers to any extent).

I like Chychrun, but I'm not sure that Detroit trading for him makes sense. I think we are probably in the trade some quantity for a few quality pieces phase of the rebuild. I think we need to start to acquire some star players by packing multiple pieces. A roster full of middle six wingers and bottom four defensemen won't win any cups. I'm just not sure that this is the move I make, though. I think if we can send a similar package for a young-ish, above average 2C I am completely on board. Does Chychrun usually play LD or RD. I get that he is capable of both, but what is his more natural position? He shoots left, so I just assume LD, but maybe I'm wrong. Trading Hronek and Lindstrom would make it necessary to slot him in on the right for the long haul, because we have no prospect depth at RD.

I personally would love that Subban signing, but I have a feeling others wouldn't.

Does Forsberg play RW? Not sure you pay that kind of money to slot a guy at a position other than his natural position.
