I'd rather have Tkachuk, who just scored 40 goals and 100 points over Pastrnak who just got 40 goals and 72 points

Canes should not be in this at all…what is the likelihood that Pasta signs a team friendly long term deal (which is what Canes would want)? My guess is zero, or that would be done in BOS.

Assets like what you are asking for with the Canes need to come with contract term for us, and there is very low probability that happens in Carolina.

When was the last time a player like Pasta was traded with one year left on their contract? Mark Stone comes to mind but that was at the TDL if I remember correctly & then immediately signed extension.

The return there was Brannstrom, 2nd rounder, & Oscar Lindberg.

Detroit declines, not giving up three assets to get one, especially not a rental.

These are all assuming he signs long term

Doesn't change anything, rebuilding teams accrue assets not give them up.

i think people forget how much brannstrom was valued as a prospect at the time of the trade. he was a top 5 defense prospect back then. in hindsight it doesnt look so good but that was still a lot of value (but i agree some of these trades are just too much.)

He was rated in that 20-50 rankings during the time of trade. I followed him somewhat close since I’ve been a VGK fan (local) and I don’t ever recall any analyst calling him a blue chipper. He was a solid offensive defensemen but at the same the upcoming draft had guys like Hughes, Dobson, Bouchard, Boqvist, and Smith that immediately jumped him in any rankings.

isnt that a year after the trade though? i get your opinion, but to understand the trade value then we have to look at specificly what was his value at that time. and i know there was a a fair amount of good d in 2018, but at the time of the trade for brannstrom, they only played had played in minors still so it was hard for them to raise their value until the end of their d+1 season. i can try to look for a prospect list for the right year.

No that 2018 draft included those defensive prospects and Brannstrom was traded in Feb 2019. I merely grabbed that link since it was the first in a search. Here’s probably the most accurate for timing & a reflection of an overall listing of top 50 after looking at the list (although I’m shocked @ Dobsons ranking since he carried his team in the playoffs).

you are 100% right! i forgot it was a deadline trade for a moment and i though it was an offseason, my bad!

All good, that being said I think the whole ordeal with Stone was that Karlsson/Hoffman ordeal so acquiring assets for a faster rebuild. Would that apply with Boston in a deal involving shipping Pasta out? Probably, I’d be curious to see what he returns and I’d wager it’s closer to Stone’s return then some posts I’ve seen on here.

I would like Pastrnak of course but I am not ready to part with Jake Sanderson (and the 7th OA pick on top of it)

              I can do :

              7th OA pick
              Lassi Thomson or Jacob Bernard-Docker
              Roby jarventie or Egor Sokolov
              2nd round pick
              Colin White

              if not then too bad.

Brannstrom was still ranked highly until very recently

He was 19th here (April 2021)

As much as I’d love to watch Pasta and Bread on the same line the only way to make it work for the Rangers is if Boston retained 50% so it’s probably unlikely. And our best package would be something like Kakko+ one of Lundkvist or Jones + 2023 1st

i also remember that stone was only willing to extend to a very limited amount of team, that might have reduced to possible return aswell. i think pasta's value is higher then strome, but i think a a very good propect and a first will be the price. (but i also dont think he will be traded too)

His current ranking doesn’t retroactively reflect his value from over 3 years ago. I’ve provided 2 listings from around that time that supports my initial statement.

Every high end player will only sign with a handful of teams for various reasons (eg family, location, taxes, etc). To assume Pasta will sign with every is a bit off to me. I’m just saying that some people are expecting an insane return in both directions (overpayment/underpayment) based on comparable trades without any support to their claim.

I wasn't arguing or anything, in fact I haven't read your conversation. I was just adding that even until last year, he was still considered a top prospect by some.

And he has done relatively well for a 21-22 y/o undersized D-man. He has 27 pts in 83 games since last season. NOTE that he has played half of his time with Josh Brown, seems like a good guy but barely a NHL player (IMO). Brannstrom looked good when paired with Artem Zub
