Pastrnak to SJ Without Extension Burns to DAL and Malkin on a One Year Deal

Created by: CheechYou
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2022
Published: Jun. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buy out Vlasic for more cap space next year to resign Pasta and Meier

Bordeleau starts off the year with the Cuda. It's only an added bonus if he tears it up in the AHL and gets a call up to stay with the Sharks. If he does, I'd try these lines to start:

Meier - Hertl - Pasta
Couture - Malkin - Barabanov
Eklund - Bordeleau - Balcers
Gregor - Sasha - Nieto

The way I see it, you only trade for a guy like David Pastrnak if he's the piece that will push you over the edge. With this roster, it wouldn't be worth mortgaging the future (or part of it) for a guy who may not even resign the following year. Besides, I think Boston rejects this deal.

Pasta and Hertl seem to be good friends (fellow Czechs, just got bronze medals together beating the US in the IIHF), that helps make this deal more reasonable. Not to mention, typically star players who are traded out tend to resign with the team that trades for them. It's a risk, nonetheless, but one that's worth it IMO for SJ. Plus, him coming to SJ without an extension drives down the asking price.

Bruins decline. They just gave up a 1st, 2 2nds, and a good prospect for Lindholm. They're not going to turn around and sell Pasta for picks and prospects.

Thats your teams fault for overpaying for a 4th defenseman.

Hard pass on that deal for pasta. Only way I’d be interested in a deal for him is with an extension and that ask from Boston would be astronomical.

Why would the Sharks trade Pastrnak if he won't re-sign us? I really don't want to lose 2 frirst-round picks for a one year... As tough as Pasternak is, we need big guys.

It's just generally more common for star players to be traded without extensions, for whatever reason(s). I think in this sense, teams that trade for star players sometimes would rather not have them come with extensions, otherwise it'll drive up their price significantly.

Sometimes they'll immediately resign with the team that traded for them (i.e. Lindholm, if we can count him as a star player for the sake of the example), sometimes later (EK65), but they usually resign with the team that traded for them the majority of the time.

    4th D-man? What are you talking about? He's a great number 2.
You incoherently missed my point. What does it being "your teams fault" have anything to do with why they wouldn't trade Pastrnak after making the trade for Lindholm?

That's all cool, but do we really need him? I think San Jose has two ways: develop young players in the system and make some point signings OR trade superstar for a superstar (top prospects for a superstar). Bad contracts spoil everything.

Definitely not that deal for Pasta, Wiesblatt is not good enough of a prospect for that deal. It would have to be Eklund or someone like that, and still I don't think the Bruins trade Pastrnak.

Not sure a sharks fan should be talking about another team overpaying for someone. Your full team is full of overpaid guys.

It was announced on the Score that Bruins and Pastrnak will have talks in July about contract extensions.

Every time I do, other Sens fans tell me they decline! Seriously, Labanc's a solid bet for a bounce-back season. Simek too.

As awesome as it would be to have Pastrnak playing for the Sharks, I got a feeling it will take more assets than our team would be comfortable giving up to make it work. For one, it's almost guaranteed that the Bruins would look for us to add either Eklund or Bordeleau on top of Wiesblatt and the 2 1st round picks. That, combined with losing the cap space needed to qualify Timo or get our RFAs bridge deals, makes me hesitant on pulling the trigger for Pasta (as amazing as he would be for us to have).
