Sabres pass, and whole plan collapsed
He's not a Leafs fan, he probably hasn't been following. Mrazek is making 3.8 against the cap for 2 more years, and his actual money owed is 4.2 and 4.4. This is absolutely not the kind of contract that the Sabres want (or likely anybody else). The Sabres have taken boychuk and bishop recently because their cap hits were larger than their money owed. This allows the Sabres owners to actually be cap compliant while paying less than the amount. It's important when you've made a dozen awful moves over 12 years, which is finally showing up in attendance. As far as mrazek, he was truly awful last year, so we have to assume that he would not be reliable, and therefore us taking his cap hit simultaneously makes us worse and the Leafs better. That 5th isn't enough. I would think at least a 2nd, and the minute that we hit the floor, that probably isn't enough. There's not many teams selling cap space, Arizona is always good for some nice cheap cap relief, maybe they will help the Leafs out for nothing, doubt anybody else does. Leafs fans will probably try to tell you that he didn't play well because of the intense pressure of playing in toronto, and that he's due for a rebound, which may be true, but the damage is already done, nobody is assuming he bounces back. I can appreciate not wanting to part with significant assets here, but if nobody is buying what you are selling, you're stuck. Maybe mrazek gets bought out, maybe some team accepts some crappy third round plus B prospect package, but it shouldn't be buffalo, same division, no favors.
