Seeing his body of work in Chicago for stretches when Crawford was out of the line up, he stood on his head a lot of nights and showed that he can carry the mail over the short-term. Whether he can do it over the course of a season remains to be seen. It does help for the canes that they have ward and lack as insurance for this year.

Was a little surprised to see him surpass 4 mil per year given his lack of starting time but I have no doubt he will be worth that contract and be a top half of the league goalie

Yeah I'm a little surprised they didn't try to trade back either Lack or Ward with half retained salary. They're a budget minded team and could have dropped at least a Mil. They would have needed to up the pick, but...

Canes can get rid of Lack without retaining.

I would say that this is an overpay for Darling. His numbers are sullied since he plays for some pretty good defense. For example, lets say that Michael Neuvirth was on the Blackhawks and the Hurricanes trading for him. I would assume, since Neuvirth plays for Chicago, that he would have gotten a similar deal since his numbers would have been skewed like Darlings.

However, being a Flyers fan, I can assure you that Neuvirth is not worth anything over 3 million AAV.

Now, the Hurricanes have some up and coming defenseman, so I am going to say that ppl like Barry Melrose and other non-religious NHL fans, will say that in about two or three years, Darling would be worth what he is getting. However, if the defense doesnt pan out, then Darling is going to look like a major overpay since he will have similar numbers to those of Michael Neuvirth.

Personally, I think that Darling was overpaid by about anywhere between 1million to 1.5million AAV. Mainly due to the fact that he has yet to see time as a starter and has yet to be on a team with a proven defense.

I wouldn't be surprised if both Lack & Ward are gone. Ward via trade and Lack via buyout.

The Chicago Blackhawks have not had "good defense" for the last 2 years. If you followed the Hawks at all you'd know that. They continually gave up some of the highest scoring chances in the league the last two seasons. Darling has proven he is an NHL goaltender and a good one. He has had stretches in the last 2 seasons where Crawford got injured and he had to start 10 games in a row. And did great both times. There is no comparison here to Michael Neuvirth.

Talbot and Jones got similar deals with new clubs and have justified their signings. "No brainer" like Clementine stated! I would like to know why so little came back to Chicago, tho?! Oh yeah, now I remember why...
