I don’t understand why people think getting debrincat is a good idea. Yes he provides goal scoring but the devils need a slafkovsky type player more, while also still having a goal scorer in the system in Holtz. The bigger issue is explain to me with this roster how the devils will be able to afford Debrincat, Mercer, Holtz, siegenthaler, Blackwood, McLeod, Severson Walsh, Luke Hughes, etc. when their contracts are up. Please explain

Give me one comp for that Debrincat trade.

Give me one time in the history of the NHL a package that sized was moved for a winger.

Just one. Doesn’t have to be recent.

Agree. DeBrincat is not a need (and will cost a fraction of this price)

We still don’t have a true “finisher” on the team. And Nichuskin fills hole Slafkovsky would fill

I just checked them and you are right near the cap and still haven’t signed Mercer, Holtz, Luke Hughes, Zetterlund, Foote, Walsh, plus all the other signings and possible free agent veteran. It works in 23-24 years from now but what about after that? In addition to possibly adding guys at the deadline. The cap doesn’t work. We can have another 9 million dollar player. The salary cap era does not work like that

Cat would probably cost Holtz + a 2023 1st (top 5 protected), or Ty Smith + 2022 #2OA + maybe Chase Stillman

That DeBrincat deal is overpaying hard. Eichel didn't even go for that much.

I’d do Smith, 2023 1st, and Stillman. I’d even throw in a 3rd this year

I don't think that will do it. They are going to want either the #2OA or Holtz as the anchor piece. I think both of what I suggested are pretty fair offers

My bad, I misread it. I’d do Smith, Stillman, 2OA

Well in fairness, while this proposal I believe is overpaying, Cat is worth more then Eichel. Why?
1) Eichel carrying a $10M cap hit trade in season has a very limited market, teams have already set their cap for the season and can't just squeeze in $10M thus there was limited demand
2) Eichel going into a major surgery with a very gray or unknown long term prognosis (which is still there). Not many teams are willing to eat up $10M in cap space for that
3) Eichel forced Buffalo to trade him, and was a public display
4) Eichel was a UFA in 4 years, that's a lot of risk and a lot of cap space for a guy that the acquiring team only gets for 4 years

Cat has never been injured, continues to get better and better, is a RFA, a year younger, traded in the offseason when teams can easily make cap space, and carrying a very affordable cap hit.

You’re kidding.

Two AHLers and two late 1st rounders wouldn’t even get Sharangovich or a 2nd overall pick. Not close.

DeBrincat is a sure thing, Slafkovsky and Holtz both unproven. The last guy like Slafkovsky who was high end draft was Kakko and Holtz skating needs improvement. With Debrincat your getting near 40 goals a season and his two way game is very good and continues to improve. You can run the gauntlet with what you have in the pipeline or try win with the impressive young core and add a top 5 perennial goal scorer.
