Description
My rankings as of June 13, 2022
ROUND 1TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
1Logo of the Montreal Canadiens-Don't love him as a #1, but combination of high ceiling and high probability puts him at top spot. View him and Cooley as 1a and 1b.
2Logo of the New Jersey Devils-Elite skating, playmaking, creativity, plays up against harder competition and showed defensive promise in 2nd half. Safest bet in draft to be a true offensive 1C
3Logo of the Arizona Coyotes-Tremendous skill and mobility for a big body. Still has some holes, but holds sky high offensive ceiling.
4Logo of the Seattle Kraken-High-floor two-way center, with a one of the better shots in draft class. Lack of compete, slow progression knocks him out of top spot.
5Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-Lack of scoring as 17/18 year old in pro league is not a concern. Elite skating and offensive instincts will assets in NHL. Could easily prove to be top-3 talent.
6Logo of the Columbus Blue JacketsLogo of the Chicago BlackhawksTwo-way center, physically developed, great stick skills, in mold of Anton Lundell, Paul Stastny. Very Mature player who likely will arrive in NHL sooner rather than later.
7Logo of the Ottawa Senators-More than traditional power forward, good hands type. Great possession, puck-protection. Will play center in college.
8Logo of the Detroit Red Wings-Elite puck skills and smarts, but without NHL speed or NHL size, hard to put into top-5.
9Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-Shut-down RD with puck moving ability. Doesn't have skate tool to become true #1. Not as physical as some say.
10Logo of the Anaheim Ducks-Guys who can defend with their skating ability are gold in new NHL. Chesley is among the best of them. Plenty of offense.
11Logo of the San Jose Sharks-Plays mistake-free, at high-speed, from center and wing. Transition game matches almost anyone. Underrated shot.
12Logo of the Columbus Blue Jackets-Elite skating and vision. Showed interior ability at U18. Needs a couple of years to bulk up, but will be one of the better offensive weapons in draft.
13Logo of the New York Islanders-An elite shot, great puck skills, playmaking and the lateral mobility makes the "Firkus Circus" a worthwhile risk this early.
14Logo of the Winnipeg Jets-Defends with skating ability and gap closure. Attack-mindset on both ends. Probably middle pair floor.
15Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-NHL size and skating ability. Still raw in passing and transition. Upside is #1 dman.
16Logo of the Buffalo SabresLogo of the Vegas Golden KnightsIsn't as light on skates as his bodyweight suggests. Good power, speed, shot combination molds for Kyle Connor-esque player.
17Logo of the Nashville Predators-High-Motor, high-energy, puck-hungry forward who will get volumes of shots from slot inward. Underrated defensively, sneaky good stick skills in open ice.
18Logo of the Dallas Stars-Underrated shooter. Quick and hard release. Puck retrieval will likely be a strength at next level.
19Logo of the Los Angeles Kings-Can hurt you standing still. Great shot release. Lacks NHL size or skating ability to be all-around threat.
20Logo of the Washington Capitals-One of the better puck-movers via pass. Intelligence over raw skills type.
21Logo of the Pittsburgh Penguins-High IQ, High complete, high work-ethic. Can pass or shoot. Will need 2-3 years in NCAA to fully develop skating (needs to improve quickness/first-step).
22Logo of the Anaheim DucksLogo of the Boston BruinsTons of risks here, but elite puck skills and easily a top-5 shot in this draft.
23Logo of the St. Louis Blues-High energy and High IQ. Likely hasn't developed the puck skills for top-6 offensive role, but can be impact guy for bottom-6.
24Logo of the Minnesota Wild-Had a very slow start on a very bad team, but piling up goals later in season. One of the better big wingers in draft. Not physical enough yet to be true power forward. Fantastic skating.
25Logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs-Smart, quick two-way d-man. Great in transition, underrated with stick in d-zone
26Logo of the Montreal CanadiensLogo of the Calgary FlamesOne of the top skaters and one of the top passers in this draft class. Won't jump in right away. One guy that really would have benefited if he had gone the college route instead.
27Logo of the Arizona CoyotesLogo of the Carolina HurricanesSmart two-way forward with high floor (offensive piece on a 3rd line). Plays well along boards, doesn't shy from battles. If shot continues to develop, could peak at Oshie-like player.
28Logo of the Buffalo SabresLogo of the Florida PanthersCreative playmaker type who plays the game fast. Has underrated one-timer.
29Logo of the Edmonton Oilers-Excellent size, speed, skating, skill combo in RD. One of the higher upside d-man in draft.
30Logo of the Winnipeg JetsLogo of the New York RangersOne of the best skaters in draft. An offensive, puck-moving dman, who is also not afraid to take it to the net.
31Logo of the Tampa Bay Lightning-Big dman with fluid mobility and ready puck skills. Probably one that gets to NHL quickly (within 2 years)
32Logo of the Arizona CoyotesLogo of the Colorado AvalancheHard to overlook the size on paper (5'8.25", 158 lbs), but as skilled an offensive dman as there is in this draft. The third NTDP dman in 1st round.

From what I hear Mateychuk would be a steal if he fell that far.

Not going to bother saying much other than we clearly have been watching different players, I like the Chesley ( even if 10 is a bit high ) and Howard love ( no idea why some have Howard past 20 )

Yeah, could be. After the first two d-man, its hard to pick who is in that next group...

Mintyukov
Chesley
Pickering

Mateychuk
Korchinski

...probably how I see 1st rounders

Ya, I don't know very much at all about undrafted prospects in general, but that seems about right to me.

I don't watch as much as I used to.
Mostly NCAA,, NTDP, a little USHL, international tournaments.
Will seek out clips, scouting reports, follow a few prospect observers that I trust.
But most of my opinions are from just absorbing as many cues as I can.

I read through transcripts of GM/scout interviews after previous drafts when they talk about why they took the guys they did.

For instance, I never really thought about the increasing demand for dmen who can defend with their skating ability, but its been a sought-after attribute in last couple of drafts.
When I see a player that does that well, or read it in a scouting report, that player gets a small uptick.
One of the reasons I have Chesley so high...and find Morden so appealing.

Another example, last year, "shooting high" was a thing I read a couple of times.
Not sure I have seen that in any scouring reports though.
