Leafs Opening Night Roster

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2022
Published: Jun. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The rumour is that Dubas wants to go cheap on goaltending, paying each goalie in the 1-2 million range. If that turns out to be true then he better assemble a hell of a team in front of them.

Rielly needs a better partner, Letang would be perfect. Tavares needs Marner on his wing to maximize his abilities, which means moving Nylander up to the first line or trading him for a first line veteran star like Kane or JT Miller.

The hawks trade doesn't make sense to me unless Kane is purely a rental. I don't think they could afford to re-sign him even without Nylander's contract and I'm not sure he would want to waive his clause or re-sign. Nylander doesn't make sense for the hawks if they're rebuilding.

Letang may be / have been the better play than Brodie-- but I don't think he's a better D partner for Rielly. Brodie has been very good for TOR, he's just not flashy.
Overall, this defense is worse, especially in their own end. Without a clear #1 goalie, that does not work well.

It is purely a rental. Leafs need to go all in this year. And for the Hawks, I'm sure they can get a package of younger players and prospects but if they're going to keep Debrincat then they need someone to play with him. And the Hawks can extend Nylander next year.

If the hawks had a plan in place to flip Nylander in a 3 team trade it could work, but Nylander likely wont want to re-sign with the hawks and will be 30+ by the time they're a playoff team again. I don't think the hawks keep DeBrincat and after trading him, I think Kane requests a trade, but likely not to Toronto.

Brodie did not impress in the playoffs. I think he's overrated by Leafs fans. Don't get me wrong, he's a solid player, but he's not worth 5 million. Letang brings offense and plays the game that the Leafs like to play, which is create offense on the rush. He's also lethal on the power play.

You can think those things all you want, but you are incorrect based on the evaluations of 90-95% of media people and other fans, so there's that.

Both of the Devils and Blackhawks trades are terrible for the Leafs, and your goaltending is terrible. The Leafs should do none of this.

At some point you need a defenseman to play D. If you run Rielly, Letang, Sandin, Liljgren out, yes, you will score. You will also get scored on, as none of them break a cycle or can play 2-on-1's that they would be giving up WAY more of.

Brodie was worth every penny of his contract and then some. His job is not to be on the highlight reel.

On a team that plays little defense then the guy one who does sticks out and his play gets overblown. That's Brodie. You think he's the only guy in the league who can break up a 2 on 1? Come on!

He doesn't hit guys, he's not big, he doesn't have a shot, he doesn't put fear in the opposition. He just uses his stick well and can read the game competently. He's a good defenceman but he's replaceable. Letang brings so much more to the table.

LOL- no, he's not the only player that can do it. He's just quite good at it.

You think Letang is big, hits, or puts fear in the opposition? I'm not sure who's point your arguing.

Using your stick well and reading the game is literally the definition of a modern Dman. Is Brodie replaceable, yes, few players in the league are not. Have you replaced him competently, no.

Brodie 2021-2022 Stats: 53 hits, 30 take aways, 62 give aways.

Letang 2021-2022 Stats: 171 hits, 59 take aways, 79 give aways.

Letang and Brodie are not even in the same universe. Letang is not a replacement, he's a massive improvement.

I've already agreed that Letang is the more talented player-- I agree they're not in the same universe, or mold. Still, you haven't replaced Brodie's role on the team-- and he's the better fit for a D partner for Mo.

If you're going to run a well below average goalie tandem, your D needs to be stacked. This ain't it.

Those Brodie hits are bumps. He is not a physical guy what so ever and doesn't have a net presences. Don't see him waiving his NTC to go to Jersey.

Not everyone develops along a straight line.

The fact is some team is going to pay him as he is a power forward who has proven he can score. And the Leafs need that type of player in their line up.
