Monahan is not a 4C when healthy and it wont cost assets to move him. You want Lucic and a 2nd? Sure. Not paying to move Monahan though

How are you going to resign both Tkachuk and Gaudreau if you're not willing to add a sweetener to trade Monahan?

While I agree Monahan isn't a 4C, the reality of your cap situation is that you may have to add a sweetener (2nd round pick) to unload Monahan's contract. Just because we have Cap space, we aren't interested in hooking teams up with a get out of jail free card.

And no....no we do not want Lucic.

The thing is he isn't healthy and if they want to sign Gaudreau and keep their core together they will need to move him this summer. Seems like a reasonable price to pay to move his cap hit.

What would you give up if wings took both lucic and Monahan with no cap retention?

Monahan isn't healthy this offseason and you have to move him in less than a month if you want to re-sign your guys. Monahan's play in the last three NHL seasons hasn't been 2C level play. He is a massive risk even with only one year left on his contract. I don't see teams lining up to pay for Monahan's services. Maybe someone like Arizona just wants to hit the cap floor and gives you a late pick, but they probably have better options for hitting the cap floor.

DET needs to get to the cap floor as well (hence, the title of this post). They need to take on some significant cash to get to the floor. CGY is going to have to pay someone to take their cap, and Monahan is the easiest option (Lucic is another, but I think he has more value to CGY than Monahan does).

Sorry. I should have quoted Ledge_and_Dairy. My post was a response to him saying we would have to pay to pick up Monahan. I don't think we will. I am fine with Detroit taking the chance, but not fine with his suggestion that we should pay, rather than get paid. I like the trade fine, just not his response to it.

I literally said i would pay to move Lucic in the comment ypu quoted.

Vegas didn't pay to move Schmidt when they were over the 10% offseason bonus limit. Calgary can do the same with Monahan

Flames dont need that mich space. I would still count them as their separate values though

If he isn't healthy he goes on LTIR. Odds are he will be healthy before training camp though so discussing whether he is healthy right now or not is pointless since the on way he gets traded is if he is

Flames pay to move Monahan or kiss Gaudreau goodbye.

Monahan hasn’t been “healthy” in years, is coming off another surgery, and has a big cap hit so yeah, he’s a cap dump with some upside.
