Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Explaining each major decision:
1. Can't sign Copp OR Strome to have any hope of extending Laf/Chytil/Miller next summer. Both centermen walk.
2. Time to put all the big guns on the first line Kreider/Zibanejad/Panarin. They are unstoppable on the PP together, and Panarin works well on the right wall there (think round 1 game 7 OT winner).
3. Kid line gets 2nd line minutes, big bet on their growth. Bring Kakko back on a team-friendly bridge a la Chytil. Hope he doesn't get an offer sheet.
4. Bring back Frankie V 3YRS/$2.85MM to skate with Goodrow for 3rd line minutes, but flex up to top 6 as needed to spell kids. If he's much more expensive than this, let him walk.
5. Take a shot at Kravtsov on the 3RW. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work out, in which case you solve the problem at the deadline.
6. Trade Georgie for a pick. Dump Nemeth with him if you can, for a lower pick in return.
7. Bring back Motte 3YRS/$2.5MM. He's a beauty grinding up and down the lineup and on PK.
8. Bring back Blaise 2YRS/$1.45MM. Same as his existing contract, tough luck with the injury. That rounds out your 4th line with Reaves on the LW. I wouldn't want to skate against them...
9. Top 4 D stay the same. Roll with Schneider and Jones at 3D. Mix them both in with the Top 4 throughout the season to learn the game.
10. K'Andre to PP2 with Trouba. Stacked.

Strategy:
A. Keep $16.8MM in cap space for 2023-2024. Might be enough to sign K'Andre, Chytil, Lafreniere to extensions, plus Kravtsov and Jones QO's and replacements for Reaves and Kincaid, Still going to be tight. This is why Strome and Copp are both goners. Might even still need to try a Lafreniere bridge extension early this season or something like that to make it all work.
B. Preserve at least $2MM in cap space this season, maybe a little more depending on injuries. This will be key every year the next few years. Gives us a little to play with at the deadline again for vatrano/motte type acquisitions and make another run at it. Still have chips to offer like Lundkvist, Robertson, Lindbom, even Cuylle and Othmann (although I love this kid) even though we're getting light on early/mid-round picks.
C. I don't love how expensive the bottom six is, but the numbers appear to work for the next few seasons and it lets this group ride together and build on the culture that seems to be amazing.
D. If it's not working, the backup plan is to shake up the roster by trading valuable D assets. We have plenty to go around.

one of the better Rangers ACGMs I have seen. I agree that there is absolutely no chance we can sign copp or strome as the salary cap next year just wouldnt work.

I would however try and sign braun back as a 7th D to rotate in with schneider and Jones to help guide them a bit and I think Motte can probably be signed for closer to 2M

Oilers won’t take on that contract, they’re looking to get cap space. Nemeth is more likely a buyout candidate. Agree with the Strome, Copp analysis, too much of an investment. Kinkaid, meh. If he was in a position where they thought he was better than Geogiev, don’t you think they would’ve brought him up earlier? I like some of your other ideas, they need flexibility

Think the Rangers need to trade a young asset (Lundkvist) for a young centerman for the third line. Goodrow should really be a fourth line guy, third line LW at best. And gotta think Vatrano walks.

All of this really depends on Kakko not getting offer sheeted and actually being willing to resign, and the Game 6 scratch really puts that into doubt. Not to mention, there has been quite a bit of reported interest in Kakko. Assuming Kakko gets offer sheeted, probably a 4.2x1 so it only costs a 2nd, what happens then? Personally, I don’t think NYR would match that with the implications of the next off season. Would they look to trade Kakko before he gets offer sheeted to try and maximize their return? If they match on Kakko, I would expect at least 1 of Laf, Chytil, or Miller to get offer sheeted and leave the Rangers. But who knows. All I know is the next 2 off seasons should be very interesting.

Edmonton is a Cup contender, they aren't in the business of taking on cap dumps. Try Buffalo or Montreal or Arizona maybe?

Very good analysis...at this point it is a given that Strome is gone...but unless Copp prices himself off the team by looking for > 5.75M per, they have to find a way to make the #'s work to get through 22/23 and leave the CAP in the same ballpark next year with the young players you mention coming off ELCs. Copp just provides too much versatility which is worth stretching other parts of the lineup razor thin...in the end it comes down to #'s and this ACGM is actually a good alternative if they can't get Copp within a workable CAP hit.

This is pretty solid - well done. My thoughts/comments:

1. I like Blais, but I'm not sure about that contract. Totally up to him, but if he wants he can take his QO for 1x$1.6M. If he wants term, he will likely need to take a pay cut, as you've shown.

2. I agree with your thoughts on Kakko - I'd love to see him on a bridge deal close to Chytil's, but evelutions2 brings up an excellent point. I think we probably need to work out a deal with him by the draft, else trade his rights in order to get more than a 2nd round pick via offer sheet. We likely can't keep him for over $2.5M AAV and still expect to sign Laf/Chytil/Miller next year.

3. I don't think we'll be able to afford Copp, as much of an asset as he is to this team, considering we won't have much wiggle room if he's looking for more than $5M AAV (which I think he deserves). We are more likely to get Strome to lower his asking price to stay (think close to his current contract at $4.5M AAV), but we need to think long and hard before committing to him (likely 4-6 years) - especially since he can't win a faceoff. We may be better off looking for a cheap, veteran, middle-6 center with faceoff skill on a short-term deal (maybe bring back Derek Stepan for a year?).

4. I think we can only afford to keep one of Motte and Vatrano - and given the choice, it's probably Motte. Vatrano is due a raise, so he will look for at least $3M AAV on a multi-year deal, whereas we can likely get Motte for under $2M.

5. Nemeth is a better buy-out candidate at this point - should cost about $1M against the cap, which is better than paying to shed his deal to some draft pick hungry team (that he will likely veto with his M-NTC).

I mostly agree with everything else you've done. Thanks for putting this together!

I'd separate Georgiev & Nemeth - you can probably get back a 3/4 for Georgie and send out a similar piece to dump Nemeth - so you basically get Nemeth gone for free considering you were unlikely to QO Georgiev anyways.

I think Motte's contract is a little rich and Vatrano's is a little light, but not in a way that would kill your cap - Motte probably gets around $2M AAV and Vatrano can push for $3.5Mish. That would only be about $150K more than you have budgeted for them here.

A Kakko offer sheet is a worry, sure, but the same way you worry that Krieder is going to tear his ACL getting out of a cab tomorrow. Can it happen? Theoretically, sure. Will it? Very unlikely.

The only things I would change are 1 - upgrading Gustav Rydahl - I don't think he's a bad option but he's never played in North America. Get a cheap vet (Tyler Bozak-type) to be able to plug in at C every now and then while Rydahl takes some AHL time to get used to the new rink sizes. 2 - I would grab a Justin Braun-type for around $1M to be your 7th D - if Andy Greene were three years younger, I'd say a guy like him that can play both sides of the blueline and fill in every now and then so you don't have to leave that Jones/Schneider pair on an island for 82 games.

Overall this is well thought out and makes a ton of sense. The Rangers' cap situation is a tough road to navigate and I think this is a nuanced take that maybe sees them take a half-step back from being a 110-point team but keeps the core together for a more sustained window of contention. And as an Islander fan, all I can say is: blecch!!!

I like this a lot. I'm hoping/thinking of something very similar. Don't think EDM will be the team to take Nemeth but that's irrelevant.

Rare realistic value for Motte. Seems like everyone thinks he's going to take under $2M for whatever reason. Vatrano I think gets more and we move on from him. In this scenario, I hope we use that $ and whatever space is leftover for a UFA C on a 1 year deal.
