Romanov is a young up and coming top 4 d man who really took a step forward and improved when MSL took over, playing the most minutes out of any Hab. Allen is one of the better backups in the league and will be important to the Habs next year when price needs his workload managed. He will be an integral part in keeping Primeau in the ahl so he can have some consistency and build off this insane playoff he’s having. We’re not giving both up for a change of scenery player who has shown nothing in the nhl so far.

Canes quickly accept, as does Bear. You can get him and sign him for much less but we’ll gladly take it.

That MTL trade is gonna get you killed in the streets

My thought was that they are not in a very good cap situation currently. The MTL media and fan base are not going to be happy to hear "rebuild" so they will need to clear some space for a on the fly rebuild/retool.

This may be way off base, but was the basic concept behind this trade.

media are not happy with the rebuild because here the media talk about the habs 24/7 and only remember the habs in the 70 who was winning every like every year.

The majority of the habs wanted a rebuild since 2018

MTL media are always looking for something to complain. Fans want that rebuild.
Also there are like 100 better options to shed salary than giving up our best young dman. (buyout Drouin, Weber LTIR, Trading Petry or Armia)

You can buy low on Petry, not on Romanov

In my eyes, these posts are great learning opportunities for people like myself who aren't always well versed on other teams.

I know he was had been in the trade rumor mill in previous offseasons , as recently as the Eichel sweepstakes. Figured a change of scenery swap for him and MIttlestadt made sense, and Allen made for a good cap relief option to even out the trade.

as far as that habs trade goes your value is pretty close to fair, nobody would flip **** if that was all it was. unfortunately, Montreal is a team without a true far and away #1 defenceman that would still be so on most of the teams in the league, think Hedman, makar, fox, Slavin, Hamilton, Ekblad, ETC. Romanov is the closest thing we have to that, he's young and plays both LD & RD, and showed massive improvement under MSL even becoming our clear-cut best blueliner. under this context, he is probably if not definitely a top-three piece for this team in terms of value, right next to 14 and 22. trading for him would almost definitely have to be an overpay just because he is really all that we have right now.

Appreciate the honest detailed response. Makes a ton of sense why the idea of the trade would ruffle some feathers then.

Out of curiosity, how much more would it take? I'm not sure from a Sabres perspective it would make much sense to add much more, but what would a trade from your perspective have to look like?

from a habs perspective, our biggest prospect hole is the wing and the net, a deal in my mind would certainly be centred around Devon Levi. from there a middle-value prospect on the wing and maybe a third-round pick depending on the second prospect. in this scenario, I would be comfortable adding more to get it done say it was a Peterka-type prospect or really anyone who when combined with Levi is worth more than romy. for Levi and Peterka I would gladly give up Romanov, a prospect in whichever position fits the sabres' needs (or a roster player) and a pick to get that done. the habs could also potentially take on cap space in the form of bad contracts to throw more value in. if say Cody Eakin was included and eating his deal was a way to sort of tip the scales in MTL's favor I would also be okay with that. as far as roster players are concerned, there isn't a single player that I wouldn't trade if the right offer came along, not including the young guys (Harris, Barron, Guhle, Rem Pitlick, Evans, Suzuki, Caufield) most of the contracts aren't the greatest but if that was what it took to get the deal done giving up any of Edmundson, Drouin, Dvorak, Petry, Allen, Anderson, Gallagher, savard and so on and so forth would be okay by me. so to recap; in a trade for Romanov, MTL would be looking for prospects, preferably in net with Levi and a winger. to get this they are comfortable moving prospects, roster players, taking on contracts, ETC there are very few untouchables so buffalo has a lot to work with here in my mind.
