Yeah but McDonagh is actually good at hockey lol. Scandella isn’t. I’d rather have a slightly overpaid guy for 6.75mil that is still a reliable top 4 contributor and can handle the hardest defensive minutes than a guy for 3.25mil who is a liability every time he steps on the ice. McDonagh’s market value this season was actually closer to his cap hit than Scandella’s was lol, that’s how bad Scandella is these days, and honestly, you’re not going to make up the difference between them elsewhere on the roster with only 3mil (McDonagh’s market value was over 4mil higher than Scandella’s this year for the record).

He is still a solid shutdown defenseman, but he's played a lot of hockey over the last 3 seasons and he's one of those guys who can fall off a cliff at any time. TBL wants to create cap space and they are limited in what they can do because Mcdonagh has a NMC. They can also buyout Scandella which would save 2.7 mill next season and 1.8 the following season.
