Description
Isles reopen their window with this roster. They do give up a ton of draft capital over the next two years, but those players would not be rosterable in the next few seasons anyway AND the hope is that all of the draft picks are super late picks.

Isles resign Barzal and DeBrincat to long term deals for a total of 19-22mm (an increase of ~7mm from their current cost). 3mm will come from Varlamov's expiring deal (2mm will be used for a backup). 1mm from an estimated cap increase. So a net increase of 3mm - however Bailey is off the team freeing up 5mm = 2mm in space

Nichushkin brings defensive prowess and a scoring touch to the top line (he is a step better than Beau offensively and is much better defensively).

Next offseason will be tight with ~6.5mm to spend on a backup goalie, 3rd line LW (resign parise to league min again maybe), a bridge deal for Wahlstrom, resigning Mayfield (or signing/trading for a RD), and a seventh defenseman. Also, good chance the Isles bury the majority of Martin's contract for a bunch of the 23-24 season.

My intent would be for the Isles to trade Palms in the offseason and use that cap for the above...potentially giving up a 3rd round pick to entice a team (depending on how he plays this year).

Detroit says yes.

Chicago says no, They can get a far better offer than that for Alex DeBrincat.

Detroit says No. Detroit is thin on the LD side as it is...giving up another body for a 4th isn't beneficial in the short term.

Osterle isn't really worth a 4th, but Detroit's defense is lacking on the left side, so... maybe?

Even Juolevi is better than Oesterle. Of course we take the 4th.

Leave Oesterle on the roster as the 7th D. Have Johansson, Viro, McIsaac, Edvinsson playing in the AHL next year. It's not a given yet that Edvinsson will make the roster, if he's not 100% ready. DO NOT RUSH HIM. Seider had 2 seasons playing in lower mens leagues before coming to the NHL. Edvinsson could greatly benefit by having that extra year. Bring McIssac and or Johansson up for some time to see how they handle the NHL. injuries will happen. Oesterle is a body. When those injuries happen you don't want to be having to throw young defensemen who aren't 100% ready into the dumpster fire and destroy them. A 4th round pick can't be put on the ice next year. I'm all for trading Oesterle. But not now. Do this at the trade deadline.

I agree with you about starting the kids in GR but that doesn't have any bearing on an Oesterle trade. We need to acquire two veterans for next season on LD and can sign Juolevi as our #7 and Walman as our #6, they're both better than Oesterle.

It's more about the insurance for me. Having Oesterle sitting as a healthy scratch but ready to go in at a moments notice when injuries pile up is better than being forced to throw a young guy into a situation that will scar him. Calling up a young guy when you think he's ready to give him a taste vs being thrown in the dumpster fire when hes not ready and he has to stay there because we don't have anybody else. These are very different.

If we bring up one of the young guys and they get absolutely torched, we need to have that option to send them back down. Getting torched for a 1-2 games is ok and can be a great lesson. Getting torched night in and night out for 20, 30 40 games knowing we can't send them down because there's nobody else will give us another Dennis Cholowski. To me the possibility of ruining a young guys confidence is not worth a 4th.

As I said, with two veterans acquired (and Walman and Juolevi signed) there's no need to bring up any kids. Oesterle had the worst stats of all defenders this season, even worse than Stecher. Jiolevi can handle the #7 duty better than Oesterle.

As I said. Injuries happen...if Walman and Juolevi go down? What's your back up plan? If Seider and Staal go down and Walman and Juolevi are their replacements...who is replacing their spots on the 5-6 pairing? I'll tell you who. A prospect who might not be ready. Put it this way. If Seider goes down with injury...The defense will go from bad to horrendous. Not an ideal place for young kids who aren't ready. Id rather have Oesterle back there getting scorched every night than Johansson, Edvinsson, McIsaac or Viro back there getting scorched every night. But hey we got that 4th round pick which is like a 10% chance of producing a player who even steps foot onto an NHL rink one day.

Lashoff?

In what way is this different than if Walman and Oesterle were to be injured? There is no more or less reason to bring up a kid if Walman and Joulevi where to injure themselves than if Walman and Oesterle injure themselves. Trading Oesterle and replacing him with Juolevi will have NO BEARING ON THE KIDS WHATSOEVER.
