A little absurd but so are most things on here

Created by: Sagecoll
Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 3, 2022
Published: Jun. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rationale:

Copp trade is to anywhere frankly. Same price Philly paid for Kevin Hayes.

Dadonov + 2nd = John Moore < Nemeth.
Blais + 4th smooth over the differences between Roy vs. a 2nd.

Reilly = 3rd = Goodrow. Rangers taking on more salary. Boston taking on more term, mutually beneficial.

Carolina severely lacks LHD in the pool, Lindgren has youth and low cost relative to value. They also have a ton of close to if not NHL ready C's in Suzuki, Rees and Ponomaryov. It's need for need.

Dallas needs RHD pretty badly, Rangers need a bit more size and puck handling from their LHD. Schneider put up better production with Nemeth/Braun than Harley did with Klingberg while being younger. Hence the 2nd.

Comps for Trouba trade are Risto (#14oa + 2nd + Hagg) and himself (20oa + Neal Pionk). This falls right in that zone. Still surprised how underrated he is on here. 12th among Dmen this season in 5v5 points on a team that did not score a lot at 5v5.

Obviously an excessive amount of trades. But Drury's blunders leave a lot of stuff to clean up in terms of cap/roster management.

First of all, Nashville will fully spit take that offer. Secondly, if you're willing to accept that for Lindgren, the Blues might like a word.

If that’s the case Tyler Myers is worth 2 1sts because he’s not much worse than trouba and on a much better contract

C'mon you think NMC Trouba waives for Nashville? Nashville doesn't like the trade anyway, they keep Fabbro, and 5.6 in cap space and their 1st rounder.

Swap Drury to Suzuki and the 2nd to a first and Canes accept. Drury is a non starter since he almost certainly makes the roster full time next season. Suzuki, Rees, and a 2nd would be a package I would propose. Interchange Ponomarev for either Suzuki or Rees depending on preference, but Drury, again, is a non starter. However, I can imagine a deal being worked out.

Yeah I doubt that. Trouba's in pretty top tier company. List of RHD in Trouba's age/size/production bracket is Ekblad/Pesce/Parayko/Severson/Hamilton/Pulock/Seth Jones.

Trouba and Ekblad led all of those guys in 5v5 scoring this year. Trouba out hit the everyone else on that list significantly with 7+ hits/60, next guy down didn't even touch 5. Gonna go out on a limb and say that someone like Parayko who's owed 52 mil over a contract that takes him to age 36 and a likely regression in those later years carries less value than Trouba who's owed literally half that money (26 mil) and has a contract that only takes him to the still solid age of 33.

For some reason he's undervalued on this board, but he carries a ton of value around the league, and frankly this proposed trade probably even undercuts that.

He's also five years older, costs three times as much salary/cap and isn't near the defender Fabbro is. Nashville likely doesn't make that swap 1 for 1.

Myers literally put up half the point rate of Trouba this season and is 4 years older, they're not remotely in the same tier. Trouba's contract is more than half paid off at this point.

Yeah I'm pretty positive they take the deal and run. Nashville wouldn't even put Fabbro on any sort of special teams, they barely trust him without Josi carrying him around. This is a pretty size obsessed front office that paid a 2nd for Lauzon and went out and got Philippe Myers. Trouba's an all situations guy with the size and flexibility that Nashville has been clamoring for since they dealt Weber.

I mean jeez look at how much Risto got to be the ****tier version of Seth Jones. Now split the difference of those 2 trades and you have Trouba's market value.

yeah that's a no then. The point is for Drury. Suzuki doesn't fit on our roster. Plenty of other teams would be clamoring for Lindgren.

Trouba has double the years left on his deal. It’s possibly the biggest anchor contract in the league

I think he would yeah. Dallas, Nashville, etc. US teams in cool cities where he could be on the 1st pair? I think he takes it.

Gonna stop you right there though. Either Nashville is a) hitting a rebuild (which they're not given the recent Duchene/Josi/Ekholm contracts), b) they're going to pay more than what Trouba makes to sign Klingberg (a guy Trouba just outscored) to a contract that's going to take him to age 38 (that just sounds much worse than 33) or c) They take the trade and run given how little they trust Fabbro and how much they've been clamoring for a big top pair all situations RHD.

    C sounds the most likely

Right, he was literally the top even strength scoring big RHD under 30 this season... he's getting paid appropriately.

But that's rich coming from a guy with OEL on their team lol.

Yeah, Canes pass. Canes have some great LD in the pipeline. Ronan Seeley being the cream of that crop. LD isn't a need either with Slavin, Skjei and Gardiner (shudder) all under contract. Drury isn't a starting point. The dude is almost 2 PPG in the AHL playoffs and has been HUGE for the Wolves. He's also a goal a game in the NHL (this is more meant sarcastically than anything). Anyway. This is an easy no from Carolina.

Edit: Chris Drury might be his uncle, but Tripp Tracy (Canes colour guy) is his godfather.

Yeah I think you’re kinda inadvertently proving the point here. I honestly prob slot Seeley behind Fensore and Nikishin (similar tier tho). Which is to say that none of them really are top 4 guys (Fensore maybe in the unlikely chance he hits that crazy ceiling). If we’re ranking skater positions within the organizational pool, LHD is comfortably the weakest (If Seeley were a right shot he might be the 4th or 5th best RHD in the pool).

So with that weakness established and Skjei hitting UFA in 2 seasons, Slavin in 3 seasons suddenly young, cost controlled LHD becomes a pretty big need. And there’s not many players with Lindgren’s profile. But we shouldn’t have too hard a time finding another interested team…

Here's the thing - it doesn't matter what you think Trouba's value is, or what the general feeling of the board is, what matters is he has a full NMC and it's known that it's because his wife is doing her residency in NYC and he specifically does not want to get sent away from her. So I think the only teams that he'd wind up waiving for are mayyyybe the Devils or the Islanders - but he's not leaving the tri-state area.

Stars and Rangers had VERY different systems this year. Zero interest in adding in a Harley for Schneider swap. Def not a second round pick

Yes and no regarding systems. Rangers had a bit of an open door system in terms of conceding the blue line (which doesn’t play into Schneider’s strengths). Dallas had one of the better blue line defenses in the league. Both teams had very similar zone exit schemes though and very similar even strength offensive metrics.

The main difference is that Harley had Klingberg and Schneider had Nemeth. And while it’s impossible to even comprehend the difference in on-ice impact those 2 players have, the fact that Schneider performed as well as he had in spite that and all the context of being younger and staying through the lineup in the playoffs while Harley did not Carries a lot of weight.

There’s way more to it than that but feel free to cherry pick. Schneider had a proper coach that knew how to get use out of him. Harley has been feed a play safe sandwich. On the rare occasion where he said screw it and flashed a little talent good things happened. Also, when was he playing with Klinger??

I’d hold your horses on calling Gallant a proper coach. Stars beat the Rangers in shot differential, possession differential, basically every in ice team metric this year. Rangers excelled at the PP and goaltending and those are 2 areas Gallant doesn’t really impact at all. And his deployment was so poor that half the fan base is ready to fire him after the Kakko incident (was the last straw for a lot of folks). So that’s what’s goin on with Schneider and he’s still doing fine in a hostile environment. On the rare occasion when the Rangers weren’t hemmed in their own zone and Schneider had the puck, he produced. In spite of his most frequent D partner being Nemeth and his most frequent F he was on the ice with was Goodrow.

As for Harley, Klingberg was his most frequent D partner this season and Robertson was his most frequent on ice Forward. Showing flashes in that environment vs. Schneider’s is significantly less impressive. Hence adding in the difference in production which also strongly favors Schneider and the age, that’s how there’s a 2nd added.

Nikishin has top pairing potential, 100%. The issue is he just signed a new 5 year KHL extension.

Seeley is better than Fensore, and it's not close. He doesn't have the same draft pedigree, but Seeley is representing Canada at the WJCs and was over a PPG in juniors this year. If Seeley was a RHS, he'd be behind... Morrow for sure, you could argue Heimosalmi... he's above Honka. He's above Keane, 100%. Nybeck? Is that even close?

There's 2/3 drafts until then. Seeley should be NHL ready by then, and there's the option of re-signing and extending Slavin (which they'd be dumb not to do). Lindgren is injury prone (I don't even mean this in a bad way, he was absolutely murdered in the Carolina series in like 6 different games) and while he's solid defensively, Fensore could do the same thing. If the Canes felt LD was a need, they'd go and get Chychrun. There's absolutely no need for it to be Lindgren, who would play 3rd pairing minutes and clog up roster spots for guys like Seeley to come up and get a shot at the NHL level. Seeley isn't close to being NHL-ready yet, but there's no trade to be made here.

Considering the guys we’ve found in the second round lately I’ll keep Harley and the second if that’s the price tag. Klinger also isn’t what he used to be
