Islanders Retool 20

Created by: beaton8
Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2022
Published: Jun. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Goal of this team is to recoup assets (picks) while getting a little younger.

Kylington/Mayfield deal was something I saw in a Flames fans proposal.
Varlamov to the Leafs was something I saw in a Leafs fans proposal (though I added Holl)
Kings acquire Bailey who provides short term leadership and experience along with versatility in their top 6.

Leafs trade seems like its in the right ballpark. Taking back the cap to make it work for the Leafs and everything.

Kings decline. We have center depth, and loaded at bottom-6, better ways to use that capspace.

Also offer sheeting a team a year before you have to sign Wahlstrom and Barzal is brave.

Very fair about Bailey, no worries there. As for offer sheeting, I think the league would be more fun if it occured more often. Barzal will likely get a 1-2 mil pay upgrade at most. Wahlstrom, yes there would be concern if he has a big year.

I really love what Waddell has done to so many aspects of managing a team including offer sheeting to obtain future value. That being said, teams with excessive bad blood will minimize trading and cause long-term issues regarding prospect development. If I spend millions to develop a player only to lose him to another team, you can bet I'll do it to others which will limit my trading partners in the future.

Islanders could help themselves with the cap by signing Kylington to a 1 year under $2M deal. 2 years walks him right to UFA, if you're going to go with that kind of cap hit it should be 3-4 years.

You're absolutely right, I didn't look much into him after the trade. I assumed a 2 year deal would keep him as an RFA. So more likely it would be a 1 year deal around 3 million.

I personally think 1 year $1.75 - $2 ish. He had a good season but there are still flaws in his game for sure. Prove he can do it again and then lock him up.

Yeah That's not a good deal for Calgary. Mayfield is a nice 3rd pair guy but this leaves a massive gap in Calgary's top 4 that they really can't afford to fill
