A Stronger Supporting Cast

Created by: mikeyscav
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2017
Published: May 7, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
General Manager- Jason Botterill
Head Coach- Phil Housley

2017 picks: 1st (8th OA,) 2nd (LAK,) 2nd (MIN,) 3rd, 3rd (WAS,) 4th, 5th (ARI,) 6th, 7th

Botterill, coming from Pittsburgh, brings his success model with the Penguins to Buffalo which is a huge reason Pegula hires him as he loves the blueprint the Penguins have followed. He hires Phil Housley as his Head Coach who has been intregal in building the powerhouse of a defense Nashville has.

NJD- Kovalchuk may be controversial, but he is a proven winner and scorer. Due to his age and ability to run to KHL, Buffalo gets him for a few young assets to help the Devils stay the course of being a young power house in the future. Immediately Kovy becomes Eichels main target

LAK- Huge deal to retool the supporting cast. The Kings desperately need a top-6 player to keep their Cup window open and Kane fills that role. Bogosian also goes to LA for a change of scenery and to help the Kings better balance their pairings. Buffalo in return gets the top-4 shutdown dman they need in Muzzin. He will take minutes off Risto and help the defense be better balanced. Buffalo also gets Gaborik who is a sketchy addition but could thrive much more in the East where it is more of a speed game. Giving him a offensive gem of a center in Eichel will help him hopefully get back to form

ARI- Swap of two veteran guys to help the needed teams more. Arizona gets the higher pick as Moulson is a bit more of a wildcard and more expensive

Pavelec signed to a PTO just in case Ullmark can't make the jump to NHL this year. Franson re-signed to help keep puckmovers on the backend and to give Guhle a solid offensive defender to play with

Not bad at all! Pretty solid trades, I'd be down with Kovalchuk especially if he can be anything like Radulov was in Montreal this season...Just not all that fond of seeing McCabe on the top pair, really hoping new GM can bring in a top LHD man to play big minutes with Risto. McCabe really seemed to struggle down the stretch this season, think hes more of a 3-4 dman not top pair though I think he still does have potential to one day develop into one. Hey check out my 2017 Sabres roster if you've got a chance and let me know what you think!

This really is quite good it just might take a bit more for muzzin, but there are picks or prospects to add on. The contracts are good and so are the other trades

Thank you both! To hit on a couple points, I think McCabe can still thrive well in a top-4 role and has chemistry with Ristolainen already. Bringing in Muzzin honestly will help Risto AND McCabe both as he will take a lot of minutes off their shoulders to let them develop more properly. I think longterm Guhle make take that spot next to Risto but he needs some time to develop.

For Muzzin comment, LA desperately needs to get out from under one of Brown or Gaboriks contracts and Buffalo allows them to while also getting a top-6 guy they need and a pretty good defender back. I think that is why they make the deal. I would be fine with another minor piece going Kings way though

I like this. Pretty close. Would you throw in Ullmark and take a 3rd instead of a 2nd.

How about Ullmark? We desperately need goalie depth in the system

Pretty solid. But I'm wondering if if LA would be so pleased to rid themselves of Gaborik's just to take on Bogo's 3 year deal. Plus giving Muzzin and a second pick.

Moving Ullmark would depend on if Cal Petersen signs with Buffalo. It's looks like he may pull a Vesey out of college but nobody really knows right now. If he leaves, I doubt Buffalo moves Ullmark. If we added Ullmark, Buffalo could possibly change the second to Gravel and a third

I believe Bogosian is still a better asset to the Kings than Gaborik right now. Bogosian in a better system could definitely regain his draft form, just not clicking in Buffalo. Gaborik isn't really doing much of anything for them

What would it take from MTL to land O'Reilly? Seems relatively nonsensical for them to use him as a 2LW

Oreilly will cost quite a bit I believe. A top-6 forward is exactly what he is and can play center in a jiffy if necessary. Figured him and Reinhart can take their dominant face offs and help keep the face off numbers up

Would something around Juulsen, a 1st and Plekanec suffice?

Well we got him and McGinn for Zadorov (1st round D,) Grigorenko (questionable 1st round C,) JT Compher (high 2nd round C,) and a high second rounder that year. Do you think those 3 pieces are enough? Lol

If you need a LHD, how about Hjalmarsson and Panarin for ROR? I am a firm believer in balanced handedness on d pairs. Yes, it worked for a while in Chicago with NH playing his off side but it makes so much more sense to play him on his natural side, PERIOD. Or at least utilize his left shot from the right point a lot better nowadays. But I regress. Housley certainly understands this dynamic! Hawks trade for what they lack -- SIZE. Plus they gain much needed cap space! Sabres get a top pair d man and a very capable scorer. With a surplus of about $8M, another center is certainly out there for Buffalo to sign.
