What they should do

Created by: Db1899

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There is no path to contention next season. If the isles trade away expendable assets like Mayfield and Valamov , they can set themselves up for the future by drafting two high end forwards. Nazar should be a top 10 pick , but a lot of mock drafts have him going in the 12-16 range. He would be a steal at 13. Yurov has one of the highest ceilings in the draft and with the Russia situation he could fall to the 20s.

@Db1899 btw you mentioned Nazar and Yurov earlier… what’s your top 10-15 ranking purely on potential value/upside?

Colorado's 2nd would be the last of the round. I don't know if that would be enough to convince Pittsburgh to move down 7 spots. But if Yurov is still available at 21st OA, I have no interest in giving him to any other team, especially a division rival.

I would take that bet. Taylor Hall willingly signed in Buffalo. You’re exaggerating how many players have Buffalo on their no trade list

Taylor hall willingly signed a 1 year deal to play with an elite center to maximize his value for the next offseason. Lets not pretend like he wanted to play there long term.

Varlamov only has a 16 team NTC - all 7 canadien teams are on it, it’s not a given Buffalo is on his list. Things change, the most important thing to players is winning.

This is gonna be varlys age 34 season he doesnt have time to wait around for buffalo to be good in 2 years. If winning is really the only thing they care about (which couldnt be further from the truth) varly would certainly decline a trade to buffalo.

Pelech and Toews carried him, please let’s not make Mayfield seem better than he is. He’s a very good 3rd pair defensive defenseman.

Are you implying that The Avs and lightning should stop making trades based on bar graphs?

Pretty sure Skinner was disgruntled in Carolina, but I would bet that Buffalo was on his No trade list this year cause they finished last in 2020-2021. As for next year he probably puts it on his list so he doesn’t get traded. He doesn’t seem like he is wants to leave lol

I honestly do not know what you are saying. Are you talking about skinner? Or someone else? If it's Varly, it's a weird argument to say that he won't accept a trade to buffalo cause they're bad. They finished in the middle and would have finished better if they had a goalie for more than half the year. Plus Varly would have a clear path to be the #1 Goalie to boost his numbers before signing another contract.

Thank you for proving he’s a 3rd pair defenseman . A very good one, but still a 3rd pair D.

Jesus christ how is that a 3rd pair defenseman? Hes in the 58th percentile of war, which means hes better than 57% of nhl defensemen (who played enough minutes to qualify). You dont need to have a 70% war to be a top 4 dman. He most certainly is a top 4 guy and it seems like youre tge one who is making excuses bc the charts dont fit your narrative 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

2 out of the last 3 seasons he’s been well below average offensively. Then when you take into account his brutal penalty differential it’s just not fair to call him a 2nd pair D. He’s a solid defensive minded 3rd pair D.

legitimately think you're both right to an extent. Mayfield is, to me, the quintessential 4/5 kinda guy. You're very happy with him on the 3rd pair because he's actually a good player and not someone you're just playing because you have no one better. He can slide up the depth chart and play top 4 minutes with better players and keep up but he's not going to be the one driving the play (ie, how his numbers looked good with Pelech this year). But if you're relying on him to be a mainstay in your top 4 you're not going to be thrilled (ie, imagine if the depth chart this year was Pulock-Mayfield-Hutton - basically the RHD version of what happened on the left side.)

I agree with this. He’s one of the better 3rd pair D In the league and he can definitely hold things down when there are injuries , I wouldn’t trade for him to be a mainstay on the 2nd pair tho

So youre saying hes not a 2nd pair guy bc of penalty differential??????? I mean ive heard some wacko things before but this is certainly up there.
Unfortunately im not sure the reason for that statement. It might be bc youre genuinely ignorant of how to evaluate hockey players, or you cant admit youre wrong so you make up bs to help your narrative. Either way its pathetic but listen you do you

I disagree. We as fans dont like the scott mayfields of the world bc theyre not exciting but hes a solid 2nd pair d making 1.45m. Id be very happy with mayfield as my 2nd pair guy and truth be told i wish he was a lefty so we could run p&p and mayfield dobson

The point I'm getting at, I guess, is that if you ran that top 4 (let's pretend Mayfield can play the left side for a second) of Pelech-Pulock and Mayfield-Dobson, you'd absolutely point to Mayfield as the one guy out of the 4 that you'd want to upgrade, right? Pelech & Pulock are legit top pair guys, Dobson is #2 with a bullet and probably could push for top pair on half the teams in the league, and then you've got Scotty. Old, reliable, Scotty Mayfield. Wouldn't it be nice to upgrade that and have him be one of the best third pair guys in the league?

That's why I think of him as a 4/5. He's great on the third pair and he's the guy you're always trying to upgrade if he's playing in your top 4 every night. I do agree that he's probably a top 4 guy on half the teams in the league at this point, but then again - most teams are *usually* looking to upgrade their top 4 precisely because they want better than a Mayfield-type. I think the most attractive part about his player profile is his cap hit - which is why I also think that this might be the last year we get to enjoy his play (I don't think any of us really wants to pony up 4x$3.5M for his age-30 through -33 seasons.)

Are you implying that taking a lot of penalties doesn’t have an impact on the game? You posted the chart, how I am making it up that he has a terrible penalty differential?. Isles fans are so sensitive lol. His penalty differential and the fact that he’s not consistently good enough offensively. It’s not hard to understand

Also the past 3 years The isles score goals at a below average rate when Mayfield is on the ice. There’s a lot of evidence that proves he’s just a very good 3rd pair D.

I guess we agree to disagree. Obviously out of pulock pelech dobson and mayfield, scotty is going to be the one to get upgraded. But if we were running that as our top 4 i wouldnt be actively pursuing an upgrade. Id ve very happy with that as our top 4.
