If I was GM Part 3 of 32

Description
Part 3 of 32 of my "If I was GM" series this off season. Trying to keep as realistic as possible, but of course stuff happens in the hockey world that is unexpected.

Here is my analysis of all my moves:
RFA SIGNINGS:
Studnicka - Young guy who has plenty of school, now needs to prove it.
Puljujarvi - Trading for his rights makes it a no brainer to sign him. Low pay, I think he needs to show this season, CONSISTENTLY, that hes worth paying for.

UFA SIGNINGS
Bergeron - If Bergeron doesnt retire, send him a one-year contract and go all out this season. He is the dictator on whether or not the Bruins rebuild this season, in my opinion.
Lazar - Solid depth player.
Malkin - In my opinion its the Bruins last shot to go for the cup, and why not absolutely send it! Very short term, two years giving us the option after one year to trade him and get assets unless a long term plan for the team is somehow figured out. One of the biggest issues for the Bruins has been getting that Second line C and what a 1-2 punch this would be!
Kulak - Great depth and experienced defencemen, will be a great leader for Zboril and hope to continue his development.

TRADES:
Foligno to ARI - Easy trade to make, ARI takes bad contract and we pay a 3rd for it.
Forbort to CHI - Continuing to dump a bad contract and paying asset(s) for it.
Debrusk to EDM - Swapping some guys who need a change of scenery. Unsure what Debrusk's value really is at the moment, but I think a swap is pretty even, maybe adding a pick on the Oilers side would be more fair, but Ive left it like this at the moment.
Reilly to NYI - Getting rid of a depth defencemen with a bit of cap on him for a 3rd is quite reasonable in my mind. We continue to get rid of seemingly useless cap hits.

OVERALL ANALYSIS
For this Bruins team, it is very likely their last season to compete. I havent affected the long term with any of my trades, or committed to anything questionable long term just to compete this year, and that where I think they need to be careful. Trading for Boeser, Garland, Fiala, Debrincat, and more, would be fantastic to compete next season and likely the missing peice to make them the instant stanley cup favourites. This being said, for all of those guys, you are giving up key assets which you cant afford when youre borderline rebuild.

As far as the goaltending situtation, which I could see get quite interesting, I havent touched it, though it was tough not to. I think the chemistry in between goalies, especially goalies that are in a 1a 1b scenario is very rare, and Ullmark and Swayman have an awesome relationship which is just so great to see for the organization. This being said, business is business and if the Bruins can get a trade down with someone in which you do NOT need to retain cap, then do it in an instant! There are cheaper options in both the trade market and the open market, though I think Ullmark could have a bounce back season, so Im electing to being patient.

The Malkin signing may also have some of you yelling at me due to our cap issue, but if we trade the other assets like I have done, it all works out and we land one of the best 2nd Line C's in the market. Other options I was looking at were; Trocheck, Copp, Kadri and Giroux. For Trocheck and Kadri it was that both of these guys will be looking long term therefor we would not push for them. For Copp, it looks very likely he will sign with NYR, therefor we would likely need to overpay. For Giroux it was defintely tempting to chase. I assume he would try and stay in Florida considering he allowed to be traded there, though if we say he is open to coming to Boston, I chose Malkin and here is why; Malkin has been a second line C for his whole career basically, so he is used to the system of not always being the go-to-guy like that. For Giroux, he has always been the number 1 C, always the first option for the coach to get back out there, and that would not be the case in Bostom, which may take a toll on him and heavily impact his play. I know he did this at Florida, though this was for a very limited time, and he wasnt there in the playoffs, especially second round. In a normal year, he wouldve been the guy to step up in the playoffs, though being second line may have affected that. Also, Malkin has the experience of all the cups, which Giroux does not.

This is a pretty good thread. I have a few notes,
1. Forbort is not a cap dump. He is probably worth a 3rd.
2. I think the oilers may add a third or another mid-round pick on that trade.
3. Craig smith fits best on the third line and maybe give Puljujärvi and Studnicka chances. Personally, I'd have the lines to start the season as
Marchand-Bergeron-Puljujärvi
Hall-Malkin/Pasta
Haula/Coyle/Smith
Frederic/Nosek/Lazar/Wagner
And if later in the season you need a shake-up change, Studnicka, Puljujärvi, and Smith around
4. If one of our top point-producing forwards, Debrusk, is being traded you'd have to be sure that Malikin and Puljujärvi will make that up and hopefully even more.
5. I am also not sure the Bruins would go after Malkin as the Bruins have a long history of not signing or drafting Russians but I'd be ok with it.

Sorry to break your bubble but Foligno is not an easy trade. 16 team no trade list. All he has to do list teams with cap on his trade list and he isn't going anywhere. Sorry his 3.8m stays a Bruin.
Oilers don't take so much more cap with DeBrusk over PJ.. There's another 2.4m to the Bruins

Doing a series like this too. Appreciate the detail. Don’t think Malkin is a bruin think he stays a pen or retires unless he goes to play with ovi. Think I’m just gonna buyout Folingo tbh but nice work

Awesome ambition on this one and though Malkin to the B´s would surprice close to everyone, it´s cool to not rule it out!

I´d put Haula as LW - Coyle C - Smith RW (and Puljujarvi 2:nd RW)! My gut tells me he´ll grow and do so big time in a B´s uniform!
Also, I´d drop Wagner (down) and promote Beecher!
