Description
GMBM needs to shake up the core and think long term at the same time. I think the player among the "core" that would return the most be least demoralizing for the fan base is Carlson. They might have to take on some contract to offset, but it would be interesting to see the Caps make a bold move this year. It's been a while since they've done so.

Also note, Carlson's actual pay is only $6 million each year though the cap hit is $8 million. And he has a 10-team no trade, which I try to account for with this proposal.

GMBM also moves useful players with just one year left on their contracts for futures to build the system.

I'm assuming Backstrom goes to LTIR for the season.

I include Wilson on IR not LTIR so I can factor in his cap hit when he returns in January or so. When he returns, Sheary drops to 3LW and Marchment to 4RW with Leason becoming a healthy scratch.

  3. 2022 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Toronto is getting one of the five best offensive defenseman in the league. They won't get him for free.

Brodie's contract actually pays out more in real dollars than his cap hit in the next two years.

I wasn't totally sure about Toronto's prospects so I chose one from the middle of lists I've seen, but that could be flexible.
TOR
  1. Carlson, John
Additional Details:
Brodie helps somewhat offset the higher cap hit for Carlson for two of the next four years.

I think LA is another possible destination for Carlson in this scenario.

Additional Details:
Could be any team looking for a bottom six winger who can chip in 10 goals and play strong on the PK.

I think Marchment with Ovi and Kuzy would be fun

I know other caps fans love to hate on Carlson, and he was definitely not good the last three games of the FLA series, but to downgrade from Carlson to Brodie while only picking up a late first, a mid level prospect, and 3m in cap space is absolutely criminal. He has easily been a #1 defenseman the last three years, and Brodie has not. That top 9 looks really scary again, but the defense looks horrendous and would need fehervary to take a massive leap that he has never been projected to in order to be anywhere close to as good as it was last year

i really do love JCs game and had the leafs not signed rielly to 8 years i would love this
but as it stands with a tight cap and a number 1 offensive dman(albeit a worse one to a degree) couldnt make this trade work
not even really taking into account the defensive ability that brodie actually brings to the team its mostly just money and position

like if the leafs had not extended rielly i would have added knies or topi for JC

For one. Carlson is worth more than that.

two, LA is not another possible location, if Blake heard that Washington was trying to trade him to us he would just hang up the phone. our RD is too deep already adding Carlson would just create more problems for us. Blake is looking for young LD to add
