I dont think that this would be a good move for Dallas to do, just something that I could potentially see happening if Dallas still wants to compete once Klingberg leaves

Woof, that burns contract is a tough one to swallow. I don't hate the trade from a San Jose perspective, but from a Dallas point of view you're better off trading for Barrie or Petry or even re-signing Klingberg

Id say it depends on what dallas wants to do, because yes that burns contract is more expensive than barrie petry or klingberg would be, but burns is the best player of those 4 right now. Burns has always been great at driving play and creating offence, and these past 2 seasons have been the best defensive seasons of his career. So if Dallas saw something they liked in that Calgary series and think they can make a run this year, I could see burns working there

Burns is better than all 3 of those guys though, Burns also never misses any games and can play every situation. i would however try and get 2 mil retained if i was dallas!

Looks pretty good. Agree with others that while he is expensive, he is easily the best of the options you have. He also really works well under Deboer and with Pavelski so it would be a great fit.

Sharks would have to retain some salary for the stars to trade for Burns.

Except he’s not better than Petry and just a little better than Klingberg. So if trade price and retention is the same Petry is the better option. And if your giving a guy 8M why not give to the guy you know and doesn’t cost assets?

Only way Dallas even considers a Burns trade is if the Sharks are retaining AT LEAST $3M per year. Between Benn, Seguin, and Heiskanen already over $8M per year & with Robertson and Hintz potentially seeing that number within the next year they can’t afford Burns full contract.

Also the same reason I’m out on Petry unless Montreal retains a good chunk of his cap (and lowers their fan-assumed asking price).

How can you ask to retain salary and lower the assuming price at same time. While I will agree with you is contrat is killing is value the player is still good. I agree with you the value is not at is max but he still could return a second round or late first and a mid prospect. Also if you need retain salary that mean higher price you don't go retain salary for 3 years for peanuts.

not being Biased, i’m the one who said only way this gets done is if sharks retain 2 mil on Burns. and after listening to a Dallas stars podcast with a scout it sounds like they are very interested.
as far as Burns Vs. Petry age is close (35 for petry next season 37 for Burns) Petry 6 goals 27 point vs Burns 10 goals 54 points and if you factor in the last 5 years Petry 54 goals 197 points vs Burns 63 goals 278 points both are fairly healthy Petry 38 games lost to injury vs Burns 0.
yes Petry is solid but Burns is the better player if both are 6 mil a year.

Burns is not the better player and the fact that you think that because a one defenseman has more points than the other is quite alarming.

Not only is Petry better, but like you showed he’s younger and also makes less.

You might as well use +/- to figure who’s good or bad.

not really! plus minus is a team stat more than a individual stat. but Petry was -11 Burns -15 both in really bad teams vs Klingberg -30 on a good team. so either way your getting improvement.

In 3 of the last 5 years the sharks have actually been worse off with Burns on the ice and in a 4th year they evenly as good. In 4 of the last 5 years the Canadiens have been better when Petry is on the ice.

And that’s just the analytics they show on this site…
