Montreal trading for better picks question

Created by: KentMcNally
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2022
Published: Jun. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
How far down the draft this year do the following packages get the Habs
(1) Anderson ($1.5M to $2m retained) + Dvorak
(2) Petry ($2M to $2.5M retained) + Pick #26 + Pick #33

Does # 1 get them between #10 to 13?? (probably closer to 13 -- the Islanders range)
Does #2 get them #14 to #19??

In either the #1 situation or the #2 situation Montreal could take back a bad contract as well, for cap purposes.

Am I off by much?

I would like to see them turn their quantity of picks this year into quality picks

LMAO! Dvo + Anderson would get a top 5 pick. Considering Anderson + 26th likely gets a pick in the 6-10 range this year and Dvo + 26th likely gets a similar return you are massively under estimating the value. See the link below for an idea on what types of trades the Habs would have to get for just Anderson. I know these are not actual insiders stating value but it does give you an idea of what Montreal would or should want.

Retaining 17 millions dollars is just ridiculous.

I don't know if it would get a top 5 pick, to be honest. It is $10M in salary going out, there is an injury history with Anderson and all the teams in the top 5 are in the rebuild stage, not the compete now stage (maybe Philly is an exception). I would be very happy if Montreal did get into the top 5, though.

I really do not see Dvorak as part of a long term plan (with Wright and Suzuki being #1 and #2 -- plus cheaper options of Farrell, Kidney and Mysak coming up). I say get rid of him now and tank for next year.

Maybe i have just acquiesced to the anti-Habs people on here who say all of our players have no value! LOL!!

Yes I agree that the teams at the top of the draft are in rebuild mode like us but that doesn't make Anderson and Dvo's value lower. The article I shared shows that a Philly trade should be Anderson + 33rd for JVR and 5th. Now I know this is not likely to happen but is it really a stretch to think Dvo has more value than 33rd? We were in a bind and paid a 1st + 2nd for Dvo but at the time it was considered by the analysts to be a good deal. Now his value has dropped a good bit but he could still return a late 1st (20+ range) and MAYBE a B level prospect at the very least just a late 1st. Which just going off the story attached is more than enough to get the 5th pick and we probably wouldn't have to take back JVR (if we did though we could get another good asset).

I hope you are right. My issue is which teams from #5 to #20 are willing to make a trade for their pick and at what value? Would Ottawa actually trade # 7 for Anderson and #26 (even if the chart value says they could)? Or do they put more value in youth and potential?

I think the teams that are willing to trade their pick without asking for a ransom (i.e. beyond the chart value) may be Buffalo (#9) and then San Jose onward. Would you agree?
