Next Step in the Rebuild

Created by: MCfubar

Description
Yzerman preaches slow and steady for the rebuild, as he tries to mold the team roster to his longterm plan. Signing Copp at a slight overpay brings a legit 2C into the lineup, as well as bringing a local boy home (Ann Arbor native and former UofM teammate of Larkin). Vegas is still in a cap crunch with most aging vets having NTC or NMC contracts, so the offer sheet for RFA Hague will be hard to match. Bringing back Namestnikov to take on the playoff proven locker room presence in place of Gagner, and he can play all forward positions up and down the lineup. All of this still provides Yzerman with options at the trade deadline.

Why would Detroit make the LA trade? Also, I don't think Kapanen is needed because we have Berggren.

Kapanen can be had cheaper, he might not even be qualified.
Helge Grans is a Hronek carbon copy, I'm not sure it's a good idea to trade Johansson for him.
Pairing Edvinsson with Hronek is a disaster waiting to happen, get a solid puckhandling defender (like Pettersson) to partner with him and give Simon a year in GR to learn the ropes.
Play Zadina as 3LW until Fabbri heals, put Kapanen as 2RW and Berggren as 3RW.

Kapanen for Erne, 3rd

Pittsburgh doesn't want Erne's $2.1M cap hit.

However, continuing with this trade, Kapanen at $4.75Mx4 is insane. He will most likely end up signing a 1-2 year $2.5M-ish deal to get his numbers back up.

I like your direction. Been seeing a lot of ‘playoff contention’ and ‘going for it’ ACGMs for the Wings, but rebuilding for atleast next season is in their better interest. A few things I’d adjust (my opinion):

Not offer sheeting Hague. He has upside and we definitely have a need at LHD, but he seems more of a depth piece as of right now. I feel it would be better to acquire a fill-in D via free agency like Cole.

While D can be regarded as a position of strength, LHD is not. So I’d keep Johansson as well.

Personally don’t want KK, but his contract is too rich for where his value is right now. He’ll get a bridge deal for a lower AAV, likely under his qualifying offer.

From the multiple writeups by writers covering the NHL I've seen on what it will take to sign Copp, all have Copp signing for $5.75 million or less, with term 5-6 years. Paying him a little more over 5 years seems reasonable, especially coming home to bring his hometown team back to prominence.

Helge is RD position of Strength, Why would we trade Albert Johansson who's probably going to be better than Helge. Yeah we pass?

That's a big deal and term for Kapanen when we're already flush with middle 6-level wingers. He'd raise the bar a bit, but ideally you'd want to have solved that Top 6 group in a few years and hopefully be stacked enough to push someone like Copp down the roster? Might hit cap issues if those sorts of contracts can't be moved. Johansson > Grans, but I loved seeing the offer sheet!
