3 trades with Copp

Created by: Angusc
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2022
Published: Jun. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Most likely no's from Buffalo, LA and Pittsburgh trades. But curious to hear your thoughts.

I put in Copp since he is a versatile forward that can play all 3 positions in place of Miller. They could pursue some one else such as Ryan Strome etc.

I've seen lots of Garland for Grans. But just curious what you think about Hoglander since he also plays LW/RW that the Kings need? He's younger, somewhat cheaper and probably has more upside.

Pens instantly say yes to that. We move back a couple spots in the draft? Okay thats basically a wash value wise.

So what are we doing? Zucker and Poulin for Miller retained? I'd do that as a Pens fan...instantly...

You could probably change that FLA first to a 2nd or even a 3rd to make value more fair. Poulin is good sure but he aint like some elite prospect. He's a late 1st rounder whos proven and shown NOTHING in terms of being NHL ready so far. Yes the pens havent given him the chance but he hasnt exactly made it impossible to not play him either...

Sabes with maybe, because it would has to trigger more moves:
    - Boeser extension
    - moving VO or Mitts
    - acquiring two RHD rather than one.

You would get way more than that even for an unsigned Miller retained.

I would say cut the retention and that’s realistic. Ask for more with the retention though. He may be a rental (and your value is really on point accounting for that), but the retention in Pitt is super important for their offseason plans, and you could milk something else out of them for it maybe

Los Angeles has plenty of forward prospects. We're looking for a top-line winger and a #1 LD as our primary off-season objectives, and our only real secondary objective is LD prospects, not left-handed-forward prospects, so Hoglander isn't someone we'd really be interested in.

That trade is missing Marino at least

I agree with pretty much all of this except for Poulin showing nothing. He could be ready next season, which would be considered his age 21 season. Rust and Guentzel made their debuts in their age 22 seasons, Rust wasn't an NHL regular until 24. Kasperi Kapanen wasn't an NHL regular for Toronto until 22 either, and he was a 22nd OA pick whereas Poulin was 21.
He couldn't play in the AHL until the 2021-22 season because if you don't make the NHL out of training camp, CHL teams will retain your rights when you're under 21 and you can't play in the minors. Despite this, Poulin was 2nd in scoring for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, only behind Valtteri Puustinen. His hockey career is just getting started.

Marino may be pushing it, value-wise, but Pens fans do seem pretty intent on yeeting so maybe they bite for the extra cap space and getting rid of him. Would be a great pickup for whoever lands Marino though. He seems constantly underrated

No, it's not pushing it, that package holds nowhere near enough value for Miller, adding Marino just gets the conversation started. Not to mention Vancouver shouldn't be sending a 1st rounder Pittsburgh's way

Miller is a rental, and this is the offseason. You won’t get a haul like that unless he has an extension, or if it’s the TDL. This roster is better with Miller on it anyway

Canucks will get a haul for Miller because SOMEBODY will pay him for an extension, and Pittsburgh makes a lot of sense to me as that suitor. That trade above is still terribly underselling Miller EVEN as a rental

Closest comp I can think of for this is probably Taylor Hall, which comes close to the value brought in here (minus the trade down in the 1st, which doesn’t make a ton of sense to me).

If the extension is in place, or agreeed to, that would for sure change the return though, and put Vancouver in a spot to ask for a better haul

Correct, Zucker and Poulin and Pits 1st for Miller retained since this thread has RDs in Jojikharju and Spence, and if we're targeting a younger winger instead. Also, you would move back a couple of spots in the 1st round

I could have put another asset in Marino since we're looking for RHD (he's mentioned lots of times) but I didn't considering if Letang leaves, Marino isn't going anywhere.

Okay yeah, that's a decent baseline for a Miller trade that comp is, although I would still bet that he ends up fetching a bit more in a return

Not too sure about what to get more such as a 2023 2nd. The trade I made is basing the fact that Miller is a rental and I know the Canucks may not get more than they want even with retention.

If Miller had term and we retain half of his salary, then we could get more quality pieces such as Marino etc.

Fair enough. EVEN if you consider Poulin a better prospect than I do, I still think Pens would be foolish not to accept this.
