Replace Joseph for Matt Murray, and this trade starts to makes sense.
Benn has negative value. The Senators are a budget team. The only way the Senators would acquire Benn is if it helps them free up real money in the short term. If Benn's signing bonus is paid in July, and the Stars pay it before the trade, he would be owed only 1 million this season, and then 6.5 million per season after that. Which means, the Senators would owe him a total of 14 million dollars. Matt Murray is owed 15 million over the next two seasons. So the Senators would shave 6 million off their budget this season, and would save 1 million over the lifetime of those two contracts.
The Stars don't want Murray, but they have to take him to dump Benn. Murray is owed 6.25M in cap per season for the next two seasons for a total of 12.5M. Benn is owed 9.5M over the next three seasons for a total of 28.5M. The Stars would dump 16 million of cap with the swap. Add in that Benn is buyout proof, and Murray isn't, they could dump an additional 5 million in cap if they buyout Murray.
When you look at the trade like that, the 2nd is probably on the wrong side, and maybe it should cost Dallas more than a 2nd since the Senators are only saving 1M in real money while Dallas, the cap team, would free up a tremendous amount of cap.
