Do not rush things

Created by: Momz
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2022
Published: Jun. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bring in some more young guys. Give a maximum of ice time to the 2023 UFAs/RFAs. Do not go and spend big contracts on Free Agency (probably next year since you'll have a better idea on guys like Zadina etc...).

The Wings are entering this FA as the 2nd team with the most money to spend, they are below the cap floor. Take 1yr (2yr max if they are around 3M) cap dumps (probably LTIR hunting too maybe) to get over the cap floor.

People want to rush Cossa. Let him play some more in the AHL before he comes to the big league.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Mrázek, Petr
  2. 2023 5th round pick (TOR)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Take advantage of the Leafs' cap situation for some picks. Mrazek can't play worse than how he played last year and knowing the Leafs' luck he's probably gonna have a bounceback season. Anyway, the salary cap won't be an issue and when his contract is up, Cossa will be 21.
TOR
  1. Kadeykin, Alexander [Reserve List]
  2. 2022 7th round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
You don't really have a choice but to trade Mrazek out of town. 2 years left on the deal is the reason I added a 5th.
2.
DET
  1. 2024 7th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Future Considerations or a 7th who really cares.
ARI
  1. Oesterle, Jordan
Additional Details:
The plan is to let more kids play, I have no use for Oesterle.
3.
DET
  1. Monahan, Sean
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (CGY)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Red Wings need to stay above the cap floor. I am taking on a cap dump. I thought about JVR but I went with Monahan since the Flames are desperate for any money they can find AND the sweetener to take the cap dump has a higher value.

My goal is to make every 2023 RFA/UFA play next year but not every forward will lock their roster spot by playing to the level they should play. There will be healthy scratches and there will be injuries that will allow Monahan to see ice time THAT'S IF he recovers. He could also possibly just stay on LTIR without taking time away from the young RFAs.

Anyway, there is only 1 year remaining on his contract and at no point, the Red Wings will have salary cap issues.
CGY
  1. 2022 5th round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
You may have 27M available. But you have to re-sign 3 of your best scorers AND you also have to fill your roster since you only have 12 roster players signed (excluding Monahan).

Every. Penny. Matters.

Even if you decide to give on one of the top 3 FAs

And for a team that still believes that it can contend, the picks have lesser importance to them than the money (especially a 2024 pick).

Not enough of a return to justify taking Mrazek's contract. Pass.

Eh, I think it’s reasonable. Don’t like waiting until 2024 for the 2nd rounder but I think a 2nd is fair. It’d be better with another pick like a 3rd maybe that we can use sooner.

How much do you want. A first for a sub 4M contract??? Last we’ve seen a first get traded in a cap dump was for a 6.25M contract in Marleau I believe. People also forget everything before his Leafs season. Unless if you want their finnish prospects but they’d rather go in another way.

I don’t like what you did with the lineup. Fabbri is not a Center, Berggren should never be playing on the 4th line and Sundqvist should be on the 4th line. Make the 3rd Ras, Veleno & Berg and it’s much better.

I’m OK with the trades.

Mrazek's buyout isn't that bad it makes more sense to just buy him out before giving up a bunch of picks.

What would be your lineup from line 1 to 4. I am confused. Fabbri is a LW right but he isn’t on line 1 nor on line 3. Also Berg on the 4th is temporary.

Eh. 1.5M penalty in yr3 and 4. We know how valuable money is for Toronto

It was backloaded, so there's still 8.6m of REAL money owed. An A level asset (late 1st) or 2 B+ level assets is a reasonable cost.

It's not a sub 4 million dollar contract because it's 2 years. 7.6 million is more than the Marleau deal stretched out over a longer period. And since Mrazek would need to be bought out (he'll never play here again) the situation is the same. Plus the contract is backloaded. If they want to buy him out: more power to them. That doesn't change the price to dump him to us.

But still I believe the Leafs want to fully get up under that contract without having to deal with any cap penalty. They will always be around and slightly over 80M yearly for their cap. They got some prospects coming up that would require money during the later year of the buyout (unless if something bad happens and they blow up the core 4, but still it’s hard to move those big contracts while saving money).

Can't compare the two contracts since Marleau's was a 35+ with a NMC. Even with a buyout his full freight stayed on the cap. Mrazek has no trade protection and can be bought out reasonably. Do the Leafs want to do that, of course not. But they're not over a barrel or desperate or forced to do anything that they don't want to.

The Leafs can afford a bit of bad cap space. They literally have no bad contracts right now outside of Mrazek, and will need to make a choice. Kyle Dubas has an incredible track record of making deals that help his team long and short term, so I have faith he'll handle the Mrazek situation. And the price will be a lot lower than people on here think because, well, none of us know anything.

I disagree that Toronto can afford to have dead cap; they need to sign 4 forwards, 2 defensemen, a starting goalie and a back-up. All with a whopping total of 7.8 million. But that's all beside the point. Just because Toronto could buy him out doesn't lower the price to dump him. And your last sentence doesn't make sense. If none of us know anything then you could just as easily be wrong.

It does make sense. Real-life NHL deals and trades consistently show that this board is often wrong, sometimes massively wrong, on players values. In general, this board overvalues cap space and young players instead of proven commodities. They also "charge" higher prices for cap flexibility as a result, and make ridiculous trade demands that are never close. It's because we're all fans, not NHL general managers who do this for a living. Of course I could be wrong, I'm willing to admit that. It's hard though when most other people here don't. So to treat your opinion as fact is, well, kind of embarrassing...

I think the forward core looks pretty realistic, but overall this team is physically weak. I think there has to be more toughness and leadership on the roster. Or we are gonna end up like NJ Devils, a lot of skilled players, but soft and easy to play against.

More BS. I've just as often seen underwhelming deals on here. When I first joined here Leafs fans were trying to trade Nylander for a 3rd! If you admit when you're wrong than admit that you made a silly, self-serving statement that didn't make sense. You implied that you were on the the right side plain and simple. I'm not going to argue semantics with you any longer but you may want to read your last two posts and then look up the word irony.
