I can't imagine there's enough money you could give him for Matthews to not win games the rest of his career on that roster.

TBH, him taking 12.5 or 13 probably makes him more money in Toronto. He gets tons of endorsements in a city where hockey is massively popular (and he doesn't give any of that up to escrow). He can also continue making that for decades once his playing career is over (Doug Gilmour still does commercials in Toronto). Sure we can talk about tax or whatever, but he's right now earning more than 3 million off the ice. That'll continue (and probably grow) in Toronto, for the rest of his life. I don't think that hits the same level in Arizona.

That's a great point about the extra money from off the ice deals. I know the people at Orr Hockey Group (who represent Matthews), and I've heard the extra money he makes from endorsements and appearances is actually closer to $4.5-5 million. The CCM contract alone is worth over $2 million
