Leafs Realistic off-season from a leaf hater

Created by: beaton8
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Leafs need to go all in as Matthews has 2 more years before he either walks, or more likely stays with a pay increase making him the highest paid player in the NHL.

My moves give the Islanders a #1 Goalie that can steal games, arguably gives them more forward depth and some versatility and some veteran depth.

These changes don't take away from what the Leafs did well, which was score. But it adds some sandpaper and I think Crouse would be a massive addition. The Leafs would need to choose which of Liljegren or Sandin they want to invest in long term, as they just won't be able to afford them both while keeping some salary open to potentially make moves at the deadline.

Mikheyev, Engvall and Holl are all victims of the cap. Mikheyev and Engvall need raises that they can't afford.

Justin Braun I am not sold on. But with these moves, the Leafs would need a cheap reliable veteran defensemen to step in, and he's who I picked.

Is Crouse for one of Sandin/Liljegren fair?

Very fair, but they still need a couple goalies. A 4th might not get it done, but I think this could be a win-win situation. Leafs dump the goalie that didn't work out. Sabres get a decent goalie that'll play 40 games and maybe a couple assets.

They need /improved/ goaltending. Its not a win win for ownership to pay 3,8 mil to a goalie who was terrible when for half that amount he could just roll with UPL and like Eric Comrie and probably wind up with better results.

Mrazek's buyout is 1.4 mil on the cap, decent savings for the Leafs. Thats where its headed.

I mean, maybe??? He's pretty underwhelming in my view, he's not a great skater and is a bit overrated for being on the world juniors. I don't know he's what the Leafs need, he's a bit more of a Nick Ritchie. Not sure he's a top-6 guy.

giving up a first for Varlamov is a tough look. Hopefully they can do better than that.

Mrazek hasn't played 40 games the past 2 seasons combined, so there is a very good likelihood he doesn't again. He was also worse than 5 of the 6 goalies Buffalo had to play last season which included AHL and an ECHL goalie. There seem to be a lot of teams wanting to dump contracts to Buffalo, Arizona and a small handful of other teams, yet there are far more contracts to be dumped than there is space to take them. He'll either get bought out or cost a premium to dump.

Very true, just comparing it to Kuemper who is a weaker goalie. He was acquired for a 1st last year and it worked out for the Avs.
