I mean, the Devils already have Hamilton, who is pretty close, if not better than Carlson haha

You're at least $2,000,000 short on John Klingberg, And between $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 short on Filip Forsberg neither ar signing that cheaply.

And, instead of giving up the pick and committing $8mil for a few seasons to 32 yr old Carlson, NJ could just sign the younger Klingberg @ the $6-8mil depending on term

If you could get that kind of return for Carlson you would have to consider it, but as others have pointed out the Devils already have Hamilton in that role. Maybe Flyers at 5 would be more interested and you replace him directly with Nemec or Jiricek? Would be super risky for the caps though and I wouldn't do it

Don’t think the Sabres would give up a 2nd for him
Maybe we’d be interested though, maybe

As a Canucks fan, I think the Canucks should look at that trade for Eller. They'd probably be able to upgrade on that third by selling him off at the deadline with retained salary

And it provides some centre depth in the meantime if they're selling off Miller

Maybe a 3-way trade? Carlson to Philly, 5th to Winnipeg, PLD to the Caps?

That's what I was thinking. If you're moving miller, Eller could be a good stop-gap and in the last year of his contract, he's easily flippable at the deadline to recoup the draft pick given up for him. Could be a low-cost option
