Why would Wood ever sign this? He's due $3,500,000 qualifying offer and you aren't really offering him any path into earning that kind of money again by playing on the 4th line. 'Come play for us, we'll submarine the rest of your career!'

Caps accept but you’ve overpaid VV by double what he should get.

He won't be qualified at that. He will be on the Market. He did not play last year, and this is a tema his numbers could be good with. Play possible 2nd PP time, and hope to make a long run in a playoffs.

Yep. Ceiling is a 1B or a top end backup. Wouldn’t get it done in playoffs and poor cap mgmt if they did this.

You traded for him. If he goes on the market, he's probably not playing for your team as they didn't QO him. You've given him no reason to sign with the Leafs as opposed to testing the market. Even if he doesn't get as big a contract somewhere else, he'll still have a much better platform into increasing the value on the following one. Your AGM would be a worst case scenario for Wood, of course he won't do it.

Just a trade to show what you will get him for.
He will go to the market and they will sign him as UFA

Not for a role on the 4th line they won't.

If the Caps wanted a player like Kerfoot (smallish forward with speed, some skill, good defensively but not physical) they’d probably just re-sign Johansson for half the cap hit and no cost. Kerfoot’s production this year was more a product of playing with Tavares and Nylander than anything else, IMO, just like Johansson’s 58 point season playing with Kuzy and Williams. Trading Vanecek or a 2nd for him like I see in a lot of Leafs ACGMs just seems like a waste of assets.
