Ohhhh boy...5 x $5 for Manson? As a Ducks fan, I love him, but man that's a contract that you're going to regret...

As for the other one, 1 year of Compher, a late 1st and late 3rd for a guy who put up 99 points last year, 50% retained? You gave up (arguably) an equal or better return for Lehkonen...

I mean there's just no way that gets Miller retained 50%.

Thats a super late 1st, a 3rd, and a bottom 6 forward for a guy who scored more points than anyone on the Avalanche this year.

There's literally zero chance that gets him.

Agreed with you on Manson.

I’m not saying I agree with the return on JT Miller, but Lehkonen isn’t the best comp because he’s an RFA and will be under team control for the next few years. Miller has one year left on his deal and the Avs can’t afford to re-sign him, he would be a pure rental.

JT Miller’s biggest value for 2022-2023 is that he can be a top C for a low cap hit. Obviously that’s a luxury but the problem there is that the Avs aren’t in a major cap crunch this year. Things start to get tight when MacKinnon/Byram/Newhook need extensions in summer 2023. That’s ~$8M in cap today that will cost ~$18M+ moving forward.

In the universe where the Avs identify Miller as a piece with an extension in play, they would probably need to ship out both Girard and Compher (maybe more) and replace them with $1M players to make the money work. And at that point, you may as well just sign Kadri or someone else for a bit less without giving up the assets.

I feel like a better comp could be Giroux? Consider that for 18 games (28 if you include playoffs), Philly netted a 1st, 3rd, and multiple years of control on Tippett. At 34, he's certainly not the player that Miller is, plus the Avs would be getting the full year out of him in this scenario.

As for the cap crunch, I guess it depends on how you could the rest of the team together...I mean, for the above example, you're not (or at least you shouldn't!) paying Manson that much, but Marchment is going to get more than $2, and there's no taxi squads anymore. I don't think there's a scenario where the Avs are a team that has any intent on extending Miller though-that'd be a poor long term decision.

Yeah Giroux seems like a better comp for sure. Something like Olausson + 1st + 3rd or Compher to make salaries work is probably the starting point, but Miller can command more than G based on age and the low salary. Doesn’t seem like the type of move the Avs need to make.

Yeah, I'm also betting that Sakic gets Kadri to stick around on a reasonable deal.

Easy pass from Canucks imo. Sub Newhook or Byram in and I would be happy with that

Giroux had a NTC and basically would only waive for Florida, which is why the return was so low. Florida was bidding against no one for Giroux's services.

Miller on the other hand, likely lots of teams would be interested in him and there's no protection. He'd get way more than Giroux in a trade because teams would actually have to present their best offer to beat other teams.

Oh yeah, sorry, mine wasn't meant to say that JT was worth less...if it's a deadline deal, it's probably a similar-ish type move (moaaaarrrr though), but yeah, a full year of him is worth more, especially retained.
