I don't like this from a Canes standpoint and I cannot tell you why at all because all logic points to this working.

Actually it's the time of trade that might work. Canes get the more expensive player...but probably goal certainly. Flames get a needed cheaper player, with more controllable years though he may/may not be as good as in the short term.

IMO Monahan is going to cost a sweetener to move. He really does nothing for a non playoff team with cap.

Exactly. Logic points to it making sense, but when I think of losing Necas and the return is Mangiapane... I cannot tell you why, but it's kind of underwhelming. I know it shouldn't be but that kind of disappointed feeling sets in

Well here's the thing. Mangiapaine had just 15 more points than Necas last season. Mangi is eligible for arbitration and a signed contract might cost 5m X. 4 year for this 26 year old You probably get 23 year old Necas on 3.0m X 3 deal and then have one more year of control. For three years the Canes save 2m in cap, hopefully three years of growth (compared to Mangi).

One of the better proposals I have seem, despite losing a great player in Mangi

I think there’s a couple things that play into it bc I feel very similar to what you feel. This trade should be and probably is pretty good (maybe add minor stuff but the bones are there).

Main thing for me is I get a Lindholm type feeling this whole time the Necas rumors have been ongoing. I just see him thriving wherever he goes and I hate to lose him even tho maybe he’s run his course here for various reasons. The lindholm trade worked out for us but would’ve been sweet to have him pan out the way he has for Calgary. Wonder what we’d look like now.

The other piece is it doesn’t really solve our top 6 scoring. Mang would fit great and think he’d be a consistent option but he’s not a pure goal scorer which is what we’re missing. So if this is a move it can’t be the only move - I see it as more of a Nino replacement and upgrade. We’re also losing a couple mill in cap space on a deal like this which isn’t ideal.
