Move On From Nylander Slight Re-tool

Created by: markhpre
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 24, 2022
Published: Jun. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Willy has been a primary scorer on the Leafs for years, but they matched up against a Tampa team at its weakest state of the playoffs and once again couldn't advance. I think Willy could get a haul to deepen the roster, hence the slight re-tool with the only star player being himself.

Leafs aren’t trading knies, and I’d rather keep steeves

Apparently Leafs are moving on from knies and Steeves as well. I find that just as concerning.

You said trade Nylander to deepen the squad, but then you traded him with 3 other players for 2 players (one being a rental). You can look at it as a 2 for 2.5 or 1 for 2 (if you look at next year).

Not sure, how you would come out deeper after this trade since Miller+Dickinson isn't even saving you cap over Nylander+Knies really.

I would consider trading for Scott Ian of Anthrax but unsure he can play hockey.

Nylander for Miller is almost a lateral trade, it’s not worth the increase in performance and the benefits of a natural lefty. Leafs are better without miller in this trade.

If your trading Knies and Nylander you better get Boeser and JT Miller because in a year Miller will likely be playing on the east coast for the Islanders, Bruins or Philly.

Nylander based on age is by far the most valuable piece in the trade. Miller is a great player who turns 30 next year and is an east coaster. It's unlikely he would re-sign.

My suggestion a three-way trade with Anaheim and Vancouver that somehow nets Boeser to replace Nylander and John Gibson as your #1 netminder. I would also avoid trading Nies. I've seen him play in person several times and he's got star written all over him. I see him in the Leafs lineup in 2023-24.

Nylander/Holl to Vancouver
Steel/Comtois/Boeser/Gibson ($3m retained by Ducks) to Toronto
Robertson/Meyers/25th OA to Anaheim
