My crack at fiala

Created by: KDev

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2022

Description
Realistically there’s probably a better deal Minnie will receive but the point is the Devils shouldn’t be offering their 2OA, 2023 1st, Holtz and especially Mercer for Fiala.

The key piece back is Gritsyuk who is one of the devils top prospects and lit up the KHL last year, he’s got one more year on his KHL deal until he comes over and due to the cap situation of minnie, I think they are ok to wait on him. Walsh should be NHL ready and McLeod is some center depth. IMO this is very fair value going back for Fiala especially with the 2nd round pick in there as well and taking back that last year of kulikov to relieve the cap McLeod and Walsh would take up.

Top-6 Cs means Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, or Dawson Mercer. I know MIN fans are expecting that kind of return, but I am telling you, many will feel disappointed.

Assume the 2nd overall pick is not on the table. There has been nothing legit to suggest NJD want to move that pick. It all comes from one answer to one question when our GM said, "I will consider anything to improve our team". That is it. And that was before the lottery.

In the Cap era, a top-2 pick has never been traded for a player.

I’m telling you, that’s the ask from BG. A means to a top 6 C prospect. So no not the guys you mentioned outside of Mercer. Thompson would be considered one in my book or a first round pick (means to a top 6 C prospect).

At this point, it feels like he’s trolling.

No matter how many times it's been explained, shown, or linked to an article that disagrees with his POV. He ignores it. Completely.

He's right, everybody else is wrong. And there can be no other possibility than what he thinks will happen.

There's a term for people like that.

Yeah, that makes sense. I should probably start ignoring him at this point. I just end up repeating myself over and over.

You are talking about term. I am talking about AAV.

So if Fiala wanted $5m/year or $9m/year, you think the trade price would be the same?

    I mean, c'mon.

Depending on how long that contract was going to be for and what teams doing the acquiring?

    Yes.

The key in any contract negotiation is how long that player is willing to sign for and for how much. AAV goes down if the contract is longer term. It goes up when it's shorter term.

EVH has Fiala comped at $7-8M on his next contract if it's long-term.

If the team is in win now mode and they want Fiala for only a few years while they go for it and are willing to overpay on a shorter term contract to keep him there. The assets they're moving are going to be futures and do them no good anyway. They're expendable, to put it bluntly. So a higher AAV isn't likely to scare them off, now is it.

That doesn't mean trade value and the overall return diminishes just because he's going to be signed for a higher AAV. Because if the team wants the player badly enough, and is comfortable enough with the contract to be signed by the incoming player the assets delt are basically inconsequential in the acquiring teams mind.

If they're not comfortable, they move on. Bottom line.

He may get 8x$8m as free agent.
If he gets that after trade, it’s likely the trade will be less.

If Fiala only agrees to extend with whomever is paying him $8m x 8 then Guerin has little trade leverage unless he is willing to sell him as rental. If Minnesota wants to start a bidding war on trade, Fiala would have to agree to much lower contract.

In other words, Fiala may get big trade return with team friendly contract…or Fiala may get his contract, but Minnesota will get peanuts.

So, the Wild will get "peanuts" for Fiala when this return isn't as good as what Montreal got for Chairot? NJ presumably isn't the only suitor for Fiala and as I've stated before thinking peanuts will get this done will just cause Guerin to trade Dumba and keep Fiala.

If you read the description I said they would probably find a better offer somewhere else and the main point is the devils are in no position to trade 2OA, 2023 1st, holtz etc for Fiala

If the Devils are in "no position" then hold on the ridiculous offers.

    Jeebus.

If Fiala holds out for a huge contract, Wild will get lower trade return. Hence “peanuts”.

Not sure why this is such a difficult concept for Wild fans to accept.

Why is it a tough concept for NJ fans to realize Guerin isn't giving him away for crap? Why not trade the oft injured Dumba and keep Fiala.

    He absolutely does.

Fiala isn't the only player on the roster can be traded you know. Other players can be moved to clear the cap space necessary to keep him.

    What a dumb take.

Listen, I appreciate Wild fans trying to spin this situation into a win for MIN. I really do. And imagine I’d be doing the same.

But let’s not go around calling each other dumb. This ain’t my first rodeo and I have just been calling it like I see it.

Yeah, and I'm sorry if you actually think Guerin moving Fiala is his only option or that he's actually backed into a corner.

Because that is the furthest thing from the truth.

To think he is. Is a lazy, irresponsible, shortsighted and uninformed take. That has absolutely no basis in fact or reality.

So yes, it's a *dumb* take.

If Guerin doesn't get a return that he likes, he can instead move out the $8M it would cost to resign Fiala by moving out either Dumba or Zuccarello and a contract like Kulikov or Jost. That would also give him the cap space needed to get everyone else signed too.

Because, contrary to your condescending opinion. Guerin can afford to resign Fiala as is. He just wouldn't be able to keep our depth intact or sign everyone else. But if contracts are moved out, then he could keep everyone and Fiala. He is absolutely under no obligation or need to trade him.

Whether it would be easy is up for debate. But there are more than enough teams out there that could use those players that it shouldn't be thought of as impossible or that the league has some idiotic leverage over him when there is none.

But given the high return that Fiala should bring back in a trade and the extra work it would take to move out multiple players just to keep one. Yeah, it's not surprising Fiala is on the block. But don't ever let that fool you into thinking he's backed into a corner because of it.

But sorry, I can call it like I see it too. You're not the only one.
