Buffalos Big Leap Forward

Created by: Hockey_Hippy
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 26, 2022
Published: Jun. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Malkin's deal looks rich/long but it will take that to lure him away from Pittsburgh. Even if he only plays 200 games over the length of it,. it is money well spent.

Trades
BUF
  1. Gibson, John
Additional Details:
Verbeek lands a stud prospect goalie on the same timeline as a lot of the players he will be counting on going forward. He also gets Mittelstadt who likely figures somewhere in the middle six at the end of the day and Petrerka who looked pretty damn good in the AHL last year plus a1st
ANA
  1. Levi, Devon
  2. Mittelstadt, Casey
  3. Peterka, John-Jason
  4. 2022 1st round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
It's time for Buffalo to throw their hat into the ring and in order to do that, they cannot be relying on Craig Anderson to be their goalie, regardless of how well he has aged. They need a stud and Gibson is that, which means thewy are going to have to give up quality and quantity to land him.

You either think that Gibson solves your goaltending problems for 5 years, or you don't. If you do, this is an entirely reasonable package for him, and one that Anaheim should strongly consider.

Bro if this was offered Anaheim couldn't say yes fast enough. This is the most ridiculous package for a goalie I have ever seen

Why give up so much for Gibson....just sign a just a good UFA this year or next. Fact. Sabres 750,000 Anderson had a better GAA than 6.4m Gibson last season. Way too much term for Manson. You really think he's going to 6.5m effective for 6 years?

I happen not to think Gibson is washed up at 28, that he is a victim of a bad situation more than he is a perpetator in his own demise. Take him out of that siuation and the problem fixes itself. In terms of overall development I look at Anaheim as two to three years behind Buffalo.

As for Malkin, the fourth year is key. Who else do you think pays him that or more until he is 39 years old. I'm not seeing another team out there who A) has the cap space now and in the future; B) Needs a center of his caliber and C) is on the cusp of contention where it would be attractive for him to sign there.

5.5 for Manson, not 6.5. That's a reasonable raise given what he making now and he is playing in the Finals.

Pray tell, what good UFA is there in the goaltending market this year? Neither Fluery (at this point in his career) or Kuemper are the difference maker Gibson is.

When you evaluate a player, you kinda need to go back more than one or two years to get an accurate picture of what that player is.

I would sign a guy like campbell (toronto) and keep all those very valuable assets. Or I would make a much smaller trade for a goalie.

Sabres finally seem to have direction and a plan. This completely destroys it

That's too much for Gibson. His contract and his play that past few seasons are going to scare teams away.

I would be happy with a three piece package that includes a good young roster player, a good prospect and a 1st round pick. Levi is a better prospect that we can expect to be included. And honestly the pick here is probably too high in the draft at #16. The #28 is probably more realistic, although that is kind of balanced out by Mittelstadt being an undesirable player. Ducks don't need another marginal center (at the moment - he does have upside), they need a top 6 winger. If only Olofsson were 24 instead of 26 he'd be what I have in mind.

Just so you know, you were featured in a YouTube video because this trade is so bad for buffalo. One of the worst trades I’ve ever seen

And if Campbell went to Free Agency, you could do that. But he'll re-sign. Which is why I didn't include him here.

I appreciate the back and forth by you two on this deal. It's far more interesting than the 'Man You Suck' specials that normally pollute the comment section.
