NYR 22-23

Created by: anelson115
Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2022
Published: Jun. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Major points (in no particular order):
-- Re-signing Copp (5yr, $26M) likely requires moving on from Chytil. I'm a Chytil fan, but Copp is a better 2C option. Makes sense to trade Chytil to VAN (mayble as a J.T. Miller replacement) for some D depth and recouping mid-round picks.
-- Georgiev trade to CHI only makes sense if they move on from either Delia or Lankinen. Getting a late 2nd Rd Pick (not CHI's primary pick) seems fair.
-- Give Rydahl and Kravtsov each a shot in the Top 9. Move on from one or both if it doesn't work.
-- Sign Stepan as 3C/4C with faceoff strength. Brings a veteran presence with prior NYC experience.
-- Bring back Rooney as 4th line option. Could provide C depth if Rydahl doesn't work or in case of injury.
-- Sign Charlie Lindgren to backup Shesterkin. Opportunity to play with his brother could entice him to come to NY.
-- Keep Nemeth as 7th D for now. Could look to trade or buy-out next off-season.

This roster is tight to the salary cap for 22-23, but should free up enough space to work extensions for Lafreniere and Miller in 23-24. If my valuations seem off on anything, I'm happy to discuss.

I wouldn't sign Stepan and Rooney. I think Rooney is better C option (or even Brodzinski) for 4th line and then put Reaves/Hunt back in the mix. Would love for them to some how (unlikely) sign Motte.

Rooney is not coming back, zero chance they sign Stepan and Vancouver trade is just god awful for the Rangers (and Vancouver wont make that trade either since they just signed Johansson).

I see those options as on-par with what I've suggested and wouldn't be upset with any combination thereof. I picked Stepan since we need some help with faceoffs and I don't know that any internal options help with that (i.e., Brodzinski). But Rooney at 4C with Hunt in the lineup works (and is a little cheaper).

As for Motte, I'm with you -- would like to see him back, but I feel it'll take 2-3 yrs at roughly $2M AAV to make it work. We can do that for 22-23, but it makes it tough in 23-24 with the young guys coming off their ELCs.

Welcome to Capfriendly, and thanks for the feedback!

Without Rooney and Stepan (or similar FA center), how would you address our needs down the middle? I don't think we have internal options that will work.

As for Chytil, I'm not a fan of getting rid of him, but I don't think we can keep him and re-sign Copp. Now, an argument could be made to let Copp walk and take a chance on Chytil at 2C. However, if we do decide to move on from him, I don't see any teams willing to help us out in our cap situation via trade. While Chytil is worth more than what I've proposed, I'm not sure we could get more during the off-season (we'd have to somehow keep him and deal him closer to the deadline). What are your thoughts?

Tbh I don't think they resign Copp (or Strome). What I would do is trade for the rights of Nic Roy from Vegas and roll with Mika, Roy/Chytil as 2C/3C with Rydahl/someone similar as 4C.

I'm certainly not opposed to this idea. How much do you think it will cost to sign Roy? Something like the Chytil bridge deal? If it's more, then we will only be running into more cap issues in 23-24, but we can certainly push the issue another year if necessary.

I think Roy would cost something like $3.5M AAV over 3 years.
