3 million for a 3rd liner is just not something the lightning can afford.

Not a fan of trading Sergachev. He showed in the cup final that he can be elite when he's on his game. This blue line really needs his services over the coming years.

That means Bjornfot or Anderson is a 3rd pair guy right?

Bjornfot. He's developing, but he's primarily a defensive defenseman so far.

Detroit says no. Zadina is at worst a middle 6 winger. At best, a new coach and new system turns him into the scoring two way player we know he can become. Plus, that draft pick could be anywhere from 1st to 20th, most likely around 10 to 15. Thats a lot to give up for a top 4D (but not top pairing regular). Sergachev is great, but the probable top 15 pick is too much to give on top of an unknown reclaim project. That deal could easily backfire for Stevie Y.

Well he expires as an RFA so if they absolutely have to trade him after the 22-23 season they can trade his rights.

I feel like Detroit is at the point where they can take a risk like that. They already have such a great prospect pool that they use draft capital to acquire proven assets which will help them get over the hump. Not to mention Sergachev is the best of both worlds: he's young and experienced with almost 400 regular season games under his belt and 2 cups at the age of 24. If you pair Sergachev with Seider, it's game over for the opposition.

You guys are really trippin on that Red Wings deal. First of all the Lightning would NEVER trade Sergachev for a failed draft pick and a 1st rounder alone.

Second of all, Yzerman snatches that deal in a heartbeat.

You mean to tell me we get a bonafide top pair Defenseman that’s just 24 years old for a first round pick that, if a player like Sergachev joins this team, likely makes us at worst a borderline playoff team next year?

There's other alternatives that don't involve moving our top young D man. Worst case scenario we trade his RFA rights at the end of the 22-23 season

Detroit is not at that point yet. Zadina is a wildcard and trading the first in a hugely deep draft class is a big risk. I dont know what a fair trade looks like for Sergachev but this has potential lopsidedness for either team. Or it could be win win, but rarely does that happen with these types of trades.

Is Sergachev a top pairing D? Half a ppg and about 20 plus minutes a night. He has the luxury of getting some easy minutes thanks to the rest of the D corps. At best, to me, he is a 1B. By no means am I saying he isn't worth trading for but you need to break this trade down for what it is.

Proven second pairing D with a lot of support on D and a good team for a proven middle six two way winger on a bad team with a questionable coach that could become a top 6 or top 3 wing. Plus a likely top 15 pick on one of the deepest drafts in awhile. Not saying no, from Detroit's perspective, but I'm not sure either team wants to gamble on this. Tampa wants to make another run, and they'd better hope Zadina can contribute top 6 right away or they need to utilize the pickin a deadline trade. Detroit risks trading away two top assets for a D that may or may not thrive in a new environment. Too much risk both teams.

Yo, I get Zadina still has potential but, respectfully, are you in some sort of denial about how his career has gone so far? He is a season away from solidifying himself as a surefire bust or maybe a decent top 9 forward. I think you can all but forget about the top line winger or bonafide top 6 winger at this point.

Zadina is really an oddity. First half of the season, he was doing everything right except fill the net with pucks. All his fancy stats told a story of a defensively sound, positive possession player ( a stat few Red Wings could boast) that had an expected goals per 60 that was literally like 8 more goals. He was gripping his stick a little too tight. So what does the coach do? Drop him down the lineup and stick him with grinders and 13th skaters. Zadina continued to create and play defensively decent, but he was way under utilized. So, after playing with Rasmussen and Erne (two offensive black holes), the coach decides to healthy scratch him.
After that, the opportunities were few and far between, and the confidence was shot. A new coach snd system would do wonders. Zadina and Vrana have some serious chemistry, but the coach didn't see fit to let that play out.

To an outsider, Zadina is a bust for sure. But there is a lot more to it. I think a worst case is Zadina ends up like Calle Jarnkrok. Best case is still top 6. In either case, you have an NHLer in Zadina. The maddening thing about him is that he came on board as an offensive player who needed to work on his two way game. He is very good defensively, and he got the hard part down for the players who are offensively gifted, but his offense came up missing.

Will Zadina be a Marian Hossa lite like he projected to be? Probably not. Could he be a 25 to 30 goal, 60 to 80 point two way player? Absolutely. It is all there, but for whatever reason, it hasn't come together. This is not your typical bust story. Riley Shehan was a bust. Nikita Filatov was a bust. Michael Dal Cole was a bust. Nolan Patrick is a bust. Zadina is not a bust; he might just not be as advertised.

Yeah, I can appreciate all that. From a value standpoint he is probably not worth more than a low 2nd round pick.

I thought he played quite well in the second half of the season and just like you mentioned it just didn’t translate to goals. His shot hasn’t been as advertised and he absolutely was lacking confidence which could have been why his shot was so underwhelming.

Even the goals he scored that nailed the top corner of the net, were like deflected off a defenders stick or wobblers where he didn’t get all of the shot, so it’s really difficult to get a strong impression of what he is capable of. He’s certainly not lacking in the perseverance department.

If he can get his confidence back, and show us a much improved shot next year, combined with continued progression on the forecheck and defensively, his value could skyrocket.

Right now, if he stays, he’s worth a 2 year deal at $1.5m a year tops.

Detroit already have eight young LD waiting in the wings in Edvinsson, Johansson, Viro, McIsaac, Buium, Wallinder, Sebrango, Juolevi. We don't need to pay for another youngster. What we need is cheap veteran stop-gaps until the kids are ready to shine.
