Hawks dont need to do that, and we're not giving away picks.

Caps decline. Ferland has slight negative value (see Bishop to the Sabres), Eller is worth at least a 3rd. I could see the Caps taking Ferland as part of a bigger trade since they're already gonna be in LTIR territory due to Backstrom, but not like this.

Eller is barely worth a 3rd if not a 4th, and Ferland has a lower cap hit than Bishop

Point is that the caps will not give away Eller for free, which is what this trade is. Give them a second for Eller and they'll take Ferland back to take you out of LTIR and lessen the real dollar hit

Yea he's probably worth a third or fourth, taking back Ferland's contract adds on to that. Once again Ferland is a negative asset while Eller is a positive one. Therefore the canucks would have to pay for eller, and then pay something else on top for the caps to take ferland back. It probably isn't a second, but a third and a sixth or some other combination of mid-round picks. Not really that important, but not trivial either

    Ferland's contract isn't a negative asset
