Montreal Canadiens Draft Board

Montreal Canadiens Draft Board

Draft Class: 2022

Description
My plan is to make a big board for each team prior to the draft, looking at guys who's abilities would match up well with what the team in question should be looking for on draft night. I'm using my Draft Guide for the rankings, and the goal is to select multiple players within the range of each teams' selections that they should consider. These players are ranked by my ranking numerically, not necessarily who the team should value first, second, third, etc. at that spot (hopefully that makes sense). The plan was to provide explanations for the first round picks for every team, then just provide the list for rounds 2-7. However, since it's been a while since I've posted these, and I'm running low on time to get all 32 boards out, I'll be just posting players, not descriptions, for every pick. If you want clarification on a specific player, comment and I'll provide it.

Habs are up, 3 needs are:

Right Wing
Right Defense
Left Wing

Great ranking! You're spot on with the draft needs, though Lane Hutson is the guy I'd target with the Flames' 1st round pick. I feel like he has the highest offensive upside among the defensemen of that class and the Habs can afford to add to a position of surplus (LD) for him. Pretty much all young defensemen in the system project to be more defensive or two-way (Romanov, Guhle, Barron, Harris) - among those only Barron should be able to QB a PP2 at best. Since pretty much all of them are decently sized, they can also afford to draft a smaller guy.

Thank you for only having Wright at 1. I’d love if we could snag Chesley, he’s at 14 for me and fills a need

I hope that Montreal goes with Wright at 1st. Then draft defenseman at 26th and 33rd.

Could I have an explanation for Maddox Fleming?

It's being said that despite draft is being held in Montreal, GM is free not to prefer Francophone players in front of others. But if I am GM and have to deal with 2 similar players, I give an edge to Francophone one.

At late 1st, early 2nd pick one of the players "must" be Francophone kid. Luneau, Lamoureux, Gaucher and Warren are all locals, to some extent also Goyette, despite he is in OHL. In lower rounds are candidates numerous, including but not limited to Dumais, Langlois, Guindon, Poitras, Gaudet, Brunet, Lavoie... Of all the picks they need to spend some on these guys. Give crowd something to cheer about! Draft might not come back for decades.

Fleming is an extremely interesting prospect. On one hand, you have a blazing fast, electric offensive talent with well above-average playmaking and shooting skills who had a strong bounce back second half of the year after being traded. On the other hand, you have a player who lacks effort outside of the offensive zone, who didn’t perform well offensively for more than half of the year. Overall, an intriguing prospect who, with a late round pick, is a nice boom-or-bust option.
