Gotta find a way to fix the goaltending

Created by: KDev
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2022
Published: Jun. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Firmly believe Devon Levi will be a legit starter in the league and with buffalo having UPL and Portillo along with Blackwood in this scenario, I think they’d be fine losing Levi.

Left side is weak but I have a feeling Tatar has really good bounce back potential

Levi is the goalie they are going to keep if it's up between him and Portillo most likely. Adams aimed at Levi specifically in the Reinhart deal.

Yeah I know.. but I’m willing to give up a decent haul for him, if that deal ain’t enough I’d make it even a bit more enticing. They gotta wait on Levi for at least another year so I’d try and sell them on the idea that their window can open now

Except that would be a hard sell. Levi would more than likely fit the window perfectly seeming it isn't opening next year.

Levi probably won't be ready this year, and NJ wanted to compete this year pretty sure but they suffered a lot of significant injuries. Easiest path to fix goaltending is UFA, they have been linked to Campbell and someone suggested on here it would be to play him in a tandem with Blackwood. NJ has their own goalie prospect in Daws to develop for the future.

In this scenario I signed Campbell and DeSmith. Once DeSmith is off his deal Levi comes in as the backup behind Campbell until he’s ready to take the starters crease. A 4 year plan would perfectly for a Devils legitimate Stanley cup run.

Blackwood/husso would be my competition with a smaller number and term, I’m just not sure desmith/Campbell that much better as far as term and dough. Blackwood might need a change of scenery, but he’s pretty much Campbell but a few years younger and hasn’t truly figured it out yet, on health and game to game. Daws going to be interesting also, Campbell/desmith probably check the box and hopefully end the mediocre to ****e goaltending of the last little while though.

What more would it take? Genuinely asking because I do feel the price is very fair, especially for an unproven goalie but I do know Levi is touted very highly so I do wonder what it would realistically take

I do think this tandem would be better than anything we’ve had in like the last 5 years but the whole point of them would be as stopgaps to transition Levi in slowly.

Also curious to know your thoughts on Portillo, would it make more sense to target him as a goalie of the future? I know he had a really good year with Michigan but then again that team was overly stacked.

You’re not wrong but goalie is by far the weakest position by a country mile right now, I think it’s better to land another goalie that can conceivably end up being a good full time starter. Can never have too many of those and we have the assets to bolster this position right now

I think they are better off sticking with Blackwood as 1/2 of their tandem since he is an RFA, if they can get Campbell with him but for 4.5-5m x 4/5 then I think that is their best move, they probably should try to trade for his rights to pitch to him before the Oilers can. If they can't get Campbell then they should try for Husso (who will probably come somewhere between 3.5-4.5m x 3).

Husso will be strongly pursued by Edm and Tor, and while they can't outbid NJ, they can make strong pitches.

Col will also be in on Campbell and Husso too probably if they don't retain Kuemper. If Jersey gets Kuemper they are probably going to be paying him 6mx6 which is probably less than ideal.

For sure 100 percent, never a bad thing to cover a few different age groups, and add quality to the depth. 20 year old daws/25 year old blackwood/ 28 husso not sure on the other few mentioned. Probably 27/28 ish and 22 21 ish so covers next few years and hopefully somebody takes the job and runs with it.

You probably want someone who is a bit closer than Levi then if it's someone you want to grow into a starter, there's always the draft for picking up more goalie prospects without having to give up a ton of value.
