What is Hextall doing

Created by: pensfan21
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2022
Published: Jun. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't get Hextall's plan at all. At this point, as much as it stings I would let Malkin and Letang walk. They deserve a pay raise and as much money as they can get, but we just can't afford them. That being said, Yohe's article apparently said not only that Malkin is probably gone and that they are still not close with Letang, but also that if looking for replacements the Penguins wouldn't want to give term to UFA's. This makes no sense to me at all. It seems like Hextall wants to play by his own rules, which will result in us getting screwed. In UFA you have to overpay on term and money, if we don't we will waste Malkin and Letang's cap space and not be able to get players until day 2. If Malkin and Letang don't return you have to either just rebuild or go all in on free agency on big names and retool around Crosby. But doing neither would just be a complete waste of Crosby's final years. If this is wrong and Hextall ends up doing well then I'd be thrilled, but it's not looking great given his track record and also how reliable Yohe is.

What is Hextall doing? You mean what are YOU doing...that's way too much for Zadorov and Subban. Manson probably goes back to ANA. Athanasiou is a lazy player and won't fit in to Crosby's demanding style.

Too much for Marchment. $3M maybe. And if VAN is retaining salary, you need to add in another piece.

That's not how free agency works, players usually get more than they're worth. Marchment will get more than 3 mil, 100%. Subban at 2 mil I don't mind for a third pairing D, he had 2 awful seasons, but if Letang leaves I would take a gamble on him. At best he finds his great play from before NJ, worst case he sucks and were only paying him 2 mil. What suggests Manson is going back to Anaheim. And Anthanasiou is fast and we need more speed. Why is he lazy? He was flying in the Kings Oilers series.

I think Hextall and Letang will meet in the middle around 8.25 for 4 years and then we use the remaining money (with one or two cap dumps) to build a stellar forward core around crosby and sign a backup goalie. Something people have to remember is that FSG had every reason to fire Hextall but didn't. He has a plan, and it must be a pretty decent one because if he didnt he would not be the GM right now.

I think we will see at least one of the pittsburgh boys in Miller and Trochek become penguins as Yohe eluded to, I would love both. If not both we could make a splash on a huge winger, idk. We just need to be agressive to maximizse sids chances at another cup becasue I think all of us pitt fans can agree that Crosby hoisting the cup one last time would we worth any price.

I really hope FSG knows what they're doing. Everything I've heard about Hextall makes me very uneasy, but I'm willing to wait to fully judge until free agency. Everytime they ask him what's on his wishlist or wants to add he says "more cap space", which just sounds like excuses to not make a move. I hope I'm wrong though. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Miller is a Penguin before the draft. I'm fine with multiple different routes, all I want is to know were 100% comitting one way or the other. It seems like Hextall stays in the middle a lot between a rebuild and going all in. If he loses Malkin and Letang then dosen't want to sign big UFA's cause he's afraid of hurting a rebuild in 3 years and then proceeds to sign a bunch of McGinn's or Heinen's it's a huge failure imo. I hope FSG knows hockey.

miller to pitt just fits like a glove for so many reasons, but I think it will be very tough for Hextall to give up the first which would be a near requirement in a miller trade (the only way I could see it not being a requirement is that vancouver has been rumoured to be a team that wants to move up in the draft, so if we give them 2 2nds and a prospect then they could package that with their 1st and maybe one of their prospects to get into the top 10) . I could maybe see Hextall circling a couple guys (miroshnichenko for one please) and waiting until during the draft to pull the trigger if their handful of guys that they were praying to drop are not there.

Hextall catches a lot of slack for his bad moves, but gets no recognition for the good moves he has made. I am going to wait until the draft and FA to finalize my opinion on him.

Josh Yohe does exxcelent work. And his article today has a lot of people worried and a lot of people optimistic for differnet reasons. It had a lot of info. However, I think the one passage that everyone can agree is a major positive and agrees with what you and I have been saying in these comments is this one:

"I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The Fenway Group isn’t interested in any kind of rebuild. This is an ownership group that wants to win right now. Expect plenty of transactions this summer."

This sounds like the aggresive attitude that would make a miller trade happen. How much say do burke/hextall have and how much do FSG have, it is impossible to say, but I hope whoever is making the final call on these decisions is going to be aggresive.

I agree with this pretty much, I'm optimistic at some parts of this article that he isn't going to overpay Malkin and Letang. If we paid both Malkin 7 mil and Letang 9 mil we would barely have room for a roster much less an improved one. This wouldn't be the case if we only brought back one though like Letang. So this is a huge chance to retool the team and add some new blood, which gets me very excited. But the quote about him not wanting to pay term in UFA gets me very concerned. I can agree though that I'm not going to fully judge Hextall until after UFA. But if he messes up UFA then I think that's the last straw. He's either going to do great or it will be a failure imo, not in between with how much is at stake. Regardless, I am super excited for UFA and the draft, it's going to be very exciting.

Sharks will either take a bad bottom 6 player contract like McGinn or they will retain. Not doing both given the primary motivation for moving Burns is to get cap space. This deal nets the Sharks a whopping $1-1.5 million in cap space by the time another bottom 6 forward in Heinen is re-signed.
