Buying out JVR really doesn’t make sense. He still scored 20 goals last year and has one year left on his contract he really isn’t that bad

Was gonna say that this could be a trade the Sabres would actually consider for Konecny
But seeing as you’re a Sabres fan, that makes sense

Flyers fans like putting trades up on here where we get Konecny- and they get pick9 + +
And that’s just not happening

Not a fan of your Campbell or (especially) Pk Subban signings though

I’m assuming his thought process was that u guys would like the Cap room, but since JVR would probably not wanna play in Buffalo that we’d agree to buy him out as part of the deal so he could become a UFA

Buying out JVR and get stuck with 4.3 M cap hit for two years doesn't make sens when we could retain 50% of his salary and trade him for whatever we can and only get 3.5 M cap hit for one year

No it makes sense for the Flyers to dump him it just doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to buy him out as he still is an ok player and could be flipped at the deadline

Again,
I’m assuming we’d be buying out JVR bc he doesn’t wanna play in Buffalo

Don’t think Philly would trade JVR somewhere he doesn’t wanna go
So we’d just be doing them- and him- a favor

Couldn’t Buffalo just trade him with retention right away then?

Possibly
But we wouldn’t be able to necessarily guarantee to JVR that a trade would be made for sure
Not in the case of how it’s laid out here anyways

You’re really overthinking this

That's what I'm thinking. Don't need to crowd the roster with people who don't have a long-term upside.

According to the cap calculator here, the buyout cost is $4.3 for year one and $1.3 for year 2 with $3.7 in total salary paid. But even at the higher cap hit, Buffalo can absorb.

Absolutely. I was just too lazy to figure out how and where. But a replacement asset would be nice.

It still doesn't make sens to have a higher cap hit when a JVR at 3.5 would be certainly receive trade call

P.K. Subban at 2x3M is as high as I'd go. I have heard that he's a fine 3rd RD and is really good in the room. If we sign his brother, it's a good story and it helps rehab the team as a destination. Pay him $4.5M salary in year one so the buyout is trivial in year two, if necessary.

As to Campbell, if we're going to sign any of the in-demand UFA goalies, we're going to have to give term. I don't think it's plausible to grossly overpay on a two-year contract. Levi/Portillo are not going to be ready for NHL full-time for at least two, more likely three years. But almost every contract is movable. As long as Cambpell doesn't fall off a cliff in years one and two, the contract can be given away for future considerations or maybe an asset. Structure it to pay salary early so its easy to buy out. I don't care if we have to pay a 2026 2nd round choice and a B prospect to move him at the end. Those assets are trivial if we're moving into a truly competitive window, which seems like a good chance.

Sure. Makes sense, I guess. I'm just not invested enough to spend time blocking Peterka and trying to find JVR a home. Kocnecny is the asset I want, and I'm okay with buying out JVR on day one if that's what it takes to make it happen.

Subban bounced back a bit this year, but was a mess of a defenseman prior.
I don’t want anything to do with him as a player. There’s other guys out there that don’t come with as much risk, and Subban has no upside at this point whatsoever.

Campbell is wildly inconsistent. Started off last year great, then struggled for months & months. I think we’ll regret a long term deal with him sooner than later. No one we bring in will likely be a sure thing, they’ll all have questions. So for me, I’d rather bring in a guy we can sign to a shorter term deal- 3 years max.
But particularly with Campbell, i just don’t like the player much.
