Robertson possible long-term deal ala Fiala

Created by: JKTakes

Description
I've taken inspiration in Kevin Fiala deal and signed Jason Robertson to a 7-year deal worth 7.95M in AAV. He's also aligned with expiry of John Klingberg's contract - because that's the way Jim Nill does his contract management.

Bridged Oettinger at 3.5M for three years and align him with Benn's expiry which I think is fair value, I've seen him overpaid way too much around here.

The key is still moving Khudobin's contract, ANA fans - would you take this deal or do I need to add a little more?

Can the Stars protect themselves from an Oettinger O/S? What if someone comes in and gives him 5-5.5M?

Yes, no matter what the Stars aren’t letting Otter go (except if some team OS him the 4 first’s one).

Like in this scenario, don’t sign Klinger and get a cheaper alternative, then match it.

Easiest way is not to give in to Kling

Ducks probably don’t do that just bc they already have stolarz. Would imagine a team like MTL or somebody else who’s not competing and doesn’t have a backup would take him on as a cap dump and try to build his value back up.

Probably a bit less, I would look at the Svechnikov deal personally. Unlike Fiala Robertson doesn't have arbitration rights.

Honestly, Svechnikov's deal is even more favourable for Dallas as it buys one more UFA year at less AAV cost.

Klinger and JRob’s deals having the same term isn’t really a cap management thing. JRob needs 8. Klinger needs to seek employment elsewhere if he wants anything above 6/6

My understanding is LAK could only give Fiala 7 years because he did not play for them last year. That may only apply to UFA's but I would have to double check the CBA to make sure

You’re right. But I’m also surprised they didn’t have MIN do a sign and trade to get that 8th year. Maybe it was discussed but they couldn’t land on what else that was worth. I guess if Fiala is happy and they’re good with the AAV it doesn’t really matter.

Why are you surprised by that? It would have cost them more and "sign and trades" never happen. 7 years is still a long time

Adding a 5th rounder to entice MIN to do it and get the AAV down is good business. There’s probably more that goes into it but there’s a way to make it worth it for everyone.

I think Anaheim says no since we got Dadonov for around 5 mil and he was someone who could have helped us

Also think Oettinger could get that OS for more

It would cost more than a 5th to make Minnesota be the team that signs him as you are now trading for a signed player and not an unsigned one

Maybe a third? Technically you’re trading for a signed player but you’re doing it after the trade has been agreed to and just adding a component to the trade that benefits everyone - players gets more term and guaranteed money, acquiring team gets lower AAV or more team control and sending team gets an extra asset for some administrative functions essentially.

Treating it as a true trade of a signed player isn’t a sign and trade. I know it’s not done too commonly but I’m sure there are comps to pull from.

I could *maybe* see a fit with the Ducks if the plan was to buy him out. But ANA isn't in a position to pay out 2.5M in real salary for just a 4th round pick. The pick would have to be a lot better to make me want to go down that path.
