I would imagine part of this is compensating Anderson for overperforming his contract last year. It's a bit of an overpayment for a below average veteran backup who may decline further. With that said, in the context of the Sabres who are at the point of picking up LTIR contracts to exceed the cap floor, it isn't like it matters.
The goalie market is going to be be very difficult for a lot of teams this off seasons. The Sabres are rebuilding. If Anderson and the team (management, coaches, teammates) are a good fit, they might as well pay a bit extra to keep him around for another season.
