Leafs with Big Changes

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 30, 2022
Published: Jun. 30, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Isles reduce their cap on their goaltending and reduce their cap on their 4 line + get a top 4 left d man and a 1st round pick.
Leafs get a goalie upgrade + 4th line hometown gritty winger +3rd. They also open up a spot for Sandin on the left.

Van gets high end right d prospect + 2 years of Nylander. Leafs get Miller half retained this year and get him with a long term extension.

Leafs sign Kane to a 1 year x 8m a year deal (kind of like the Taylor Hall deal a few years back with Buffalo). This makes sure they can afford Millers extension next year.

This team can score, is very strong and big and would be a problem!

They can also sign another back up goalie, if they do not believe in Kallgren. I thought he looked super calm and poised last year. But his numbers weren't great.

Thoughts?

Miller would already be signed to that contract with VAN if that's what he was willing to sign for. (he wants 8-8.5 mill per year)

That seems like a fair return for Miller. However, if he's willing to sign for 7.5x8 I think the Canucks might keep him.

Lou has said he is not trading Varly, there is no interest in Muzzin at full price and Isles do not want the additional years of those contracts.

It is a fairly simple no.

What do you think his contract will look like? 8.5x8?

I think so, maybe a little lower, 8x6 would be my walk away point if I were patty, but I could see him getting a bit more term

It is going to be very hard for the Isles to improve. Having 9m in goalies is too much. and they also have 4 different 4th liners making 1.1 to 2.5m a year. Most of Lou's deals have me completely scratching my head.

They have very few prospects (aatu and Wallstrom top the list), a lot of big contracts for players who do not deserve them. It will be interesting to see what they can do! At least they have Barzal, Pullock and Pelech.

I agree that the term is too long which is why I said might. I wouldn't want to do more than 8x6 either.

Keeping him at 8x6 would be really tempting but Drance is saying that there are some really good offers coming in so I would be really surprised if he made it to the draft without being delt

From a prospect perspective the Isles have Raty, Holmstrom, Dufour, Bolduc, Salo, Wilde, Skarek who all project to be NHL level players.

Their 4th liner contracts do not really hurt the team, and Clutter is making less next season than he was last season.

They have a great C core with Barzal, Nelson, Pageau, and Cizikas, and good not great W's. The D core has Pulock, Pelech, Dobson and Mayfield who are all legit Top-4 players with Salo ready to play full time.

People love to criticize Lou, maybe some decisions like signing Palmeri and trading Toews were mistakes but the team is solid at all positions except 2 LD which is the target focus (not Muzzin).
