Pending unknown circumstances

Description
This is in no way meant to be political or insensitive. In light of the Russian player article that came out today on The Athletic, I wanted to evaluate MNs outlook in the event where Kaprizov is unable to play for some/all of the 22-23 season.

In that event, I think MN needs to aggressively attempt to punt the season.

3 swings at a potential ultra high-end prospect in Bedard, Michkov or Fantilli is too rare to pass up. And the depth beyond them is looking to be quite strong, as well.

IMO, it would be remarkably irresponsible to try and be competitive without Kaprizov and with 13M in dead cap.

Finally, not sure how Kaprizovs cap would be handled, but if it were not charged against the limit, then I think you’d open the door to take on some bad pending UFA contracts or take money back in deals to facilitate better returns. Not gonna pretend to know what those may look like at this time.

This is beyond bad in terms of having Minnesota take on petr and his cap dump in addition to giving Talbot to Toronto

Yeah that was really just a placeholder to depict the type of concept I was referring to in my last paragraph of the description.

You can feel free to get as creative as you’d like with that in mind.

Fun (maybe not so) thought. If they can guarantee Kaprisov will not play in 2022/23 at all, taking on 1-2 bad 1 year contracts (maybe Killorn?) to get assets would be good.

Concept is sound, but i believe Wild would get more for Dumba at the TD.

For sure, I just wanted to throw something out there to depict the type of thing I was referring to, but didn’t wanna get into a value argument with Sens fans.

I agree with you though

Need to tank harder than that :P

Also I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself here. So was that article.

Yeah it’s more a thought experiment than anything else, but if these GMs are as legitimately concerned as the article makes it sound, then I think MN needs to contingency plan for a short term tank

Ivan Fedotov (PHL goalie) was detained trying to leave Russia. Arrested for “evading military service”. This could be a precursor of what’s to come.

If Kaprizov can't play for whatever reason.
-Dumba should be traded before the season. I don't see his value changing much throughout the season. It's been 3 seasons since his peck injury so I think his big scoring days are lost.
-I wouldn't trade Talbot until the season starts. I think he'll get a better return if they sit on him until the TDL or the goalie injures start adding up for a team during the season.

I'd keep Rossi in the AHL. He's not ready to be a NHL 1C. This bottom-6 is just setting him up for failure. He needs to play skill players, not roster fillers.
